Description
Cowan TS1672
Official name of this Trig Station is: Cowan.
Serial number: TS1672.
Last inspected: June 24, 1982.
Elevation: 197 metres.
Found just off the Cowan Track on the left hand side a short bush bash will get you to the Trig. The post burnt down quite some time ago and the remains of the vanes are still on top of the cairn.

On an enjoyable jog along the Cowan Trail I stopped off here. I wasn’t expecting much when I left the path, so was impressed by the scale of the cairn (if not its condition). TFTT
Easy to spot just off the track. Another nice stoney built up trig in pretty good condirtion.

Came out to the area with 3 specific Trigs to find. Roach, Long and Cowan. There are others nearby, but they will require more time and planning...and maybe some extra bravery, or a fellow trig hunter for support. Both trails are good for the mountain bike. Not too hard. Not too easy. I came home very satisfied.

Wouldn't go out of my way for this one... but a short detour off the Cowan Trail

Out on another training walk this morning, this time with my Grumpy Old mate Baktrak.
The cairn was visible from the track and was intact
An excellent walk in perfect / cool conditions.

I haven't seen too many trigs so far but I was very impressed by the cairn. Seems to be in very good condition and well made.
First found this trig on a bush walk from St Ives to Terrey Hills. Bushbashed our way to White then onto Cowan before heading around to try our luck with Wilkins (which proved elusive).
Revisited the trig on a SBW "Six Trigs in a Day" walk on 29 November 2014 where we visited White, Cowan, Roach, Long, Arthur and Wilkins.

29/03/14. 10:33 AM. GCA Cache #16. I was up in Kuring-Gai NP this morning looking for two of Tyreless' new GC caches (Long and Cowan). While I grabbed them I decided to look for the GCA trigs as well.
This was the last cache of the day, found about 20 minutes after the Cowan GC. It was an easy bush bash, and spotted not long after leaving the track. It's in MUCH better condition than Roach, down the road. TFTC }:)

Today was a public holiday so I had more bushwalking time than was normal, meaning I could fit in a side trip to Cowan (having earlier found Arthur). I know this trail quite well and could see the trig from the track as the bush was thinned out by the bushfires.
Mrs T was most amused when I arrived home streaked from head to toe in charcoal from pushing through the blackened bush.

Thought, seeing as I was passing, I would check out this trig point - Hadn't searched for one before, so was quite surprised to find such a great structure in the bush. It was quite exciting!!

The way these old trigs suddenly appear as you work a path through overgrown bush is always rewarding. What's left of the vanes and post is all burnt and rusted away but the cairn is in excellent condition. I wonder if surveyors of the past were educated in dry stone construction. It's certainly a skill.
A nice little detour on the way to the Near and Far GC.

Having spotted this array of trigs on old parish maps a while back it was good that rogerw3 managed to get accurate coords so we could look for these without concern. Having bushbashed to remote spots with only my estimated coords in the past I know how tricky it can be.
Anyway today we finally set off to find this trig and the further along GC cache "Near and Far". This trip had been postponed many times but today the weather was good enough and we parked at the end of the road and headed along the horsey trail. Very boggy near the start with the moisture of a wet summer and we had to wend our way around a lot of mud.
After a while we took the first left turn, knowing that the Wilkins trig was to the right. Then further along we left Long trail for the Cowan trail which was horsey free and a lot less graded. Lots of spider webs and vegetation growing in the road. The the GPSr pointed left and we had a relatively light bushbash to the impressive old cairn with its vane remnants. A good find. Took our photos and admired the solid construction. Looks like it could outlast the Pyramids.
Pushed on past this point on the trail and found the Aboriginal carvings a few hundred metres on, very impressive but becoming indistinct. Then went on to "Near and Far" and returned, heading to Roach trig as a detour on the way back to the car. A total of 9.5 km walked.

Another great trig construction on our hike today. Not too far off the track and certainly big enough to spot from a bit of a distance!
After Long and Roach, we took the track out to this trig. Another really well built cairn not too far off the track. Thanks for the co-ords rogerw3
Another great old 'rock cairn style' trig found while on an afternoon trig hunting expedition with rogerw3.
Once again, rogerw3's calculations off the old maps was nearly spot on, and after a brief bush bash we found a lovely, well-shaped cairn. Care had been taken to make it nice and round, like an old stone tower. This was no higgledy-piggledy pile of rocks but something created by a person with stone mason training of some degree.
And who carried all these rocks to the site? That would have been a job in itself.
We photographed the remains of the post and vanes -- very interesting.
This is a great addition to Sydney's growing collection of re-found TSs!
'Three Thumbs Up' for craftsmanship.

Trig number 2 on today's Trig hunt with pjmpjm. A straightforward walk along the Perimeter Trail, then onto the Long Track and finally along the Cowan Track with just a very short bush bash to the Trig. You will find the cairn in excellent condition with the remains of the vanes collapsed on top of the cairn, the post has burnt down.
