Description

A Trig Point or Trig Station is a virtual cache which requires a cacher to locate the Trigonometric Station at GZ.

Trig points are generally located at the top of hills or points of prominence in the landscape. Many provide unique views and challenges, with some being difficult to get to.

These points were regarded as valuable to surveyors, providing reference points for measuring distance and direction, and assisting in the creation of maps.

To log a find on the Geocaching Australia website, you will need to include a picture of the trig point, along with your GPS receiver and (preferably) yourself. Long distance / telephoto type pictures are against the spirit of this cache. You are encouraged to leave a description of your journey in your log to help others in finding the trig point.

Please respect local laws and regulations when searching for trig points. If you believe that a trig point is located on private property or in a dangerous location, you may archive the cache, by clicking on Log this Cache and place an "Archived" log on the Geocaching Australia website.

If you feel that you can add to the description of this trig point or adjust the difficulty / terrain ratings, please feel free to edit this cache and amend the information suitably. Vandalism of the cache description or other information will result in your account being terminated.

This trig is listed as a Trig Station on the ACT Planning and Land Authority Survey Control Marks Database  http://www.actpla.act.gov.au/tools_resources/maps_land_survey/surveying_data/surveyors_information/survey_control_marks

The 'Neighbour Trigonometrical Station' is repeatedly referred to as a reference point for defining boundaries of ACT districts in the 'Districts Ordinance 1967'. http://www.legislation.act.gov.au/a/1967-10/19670524-44787/pdf/1967-10.pdf

A lone bolt in the concrete is the only obvious remains of the trig point. There are some surrounding stones which may or may not have been part of a rock cairn.

Found on a quick morning caching run in Tuggeranong. Hasn't been found in over a year - I am incredibly surprised! Lovely views! TFTC GCA!

I headed over here to some familiar territory from the other peak. I actually found 3 bolts. It would have been good to see it in its former glory. Must say I was a little surprised to think that there was a trig here and not one a little further south.

Found while caching in the area.

A choice this morning a cache or a trig, the trig won, but was disappointed to see no trig just a bolt on the ground, oh well a great view and geodog enjoyed the walk

Took a picture of geodog next to the bolt

Trig or not I'm still going to log it. Came up via the trig/bolt on the way to Just for views #8. Didn't have the coords in the GPS as lets face it trigs aren't exactly camouflaged very well... usually. Any way after putting in the coords the bolt was easily found.

Wandered up today to find the bolt. All good.

When I noticed that one of my closest unfound caches was this trig I wondered how I managed to come up here before to do the nearby cache and not find this. Now reading the logs a I realise why.

I agree with TE and MBO. The remains of a former trig is not a trig. Especially since it is just a mounting bolt from the structure traditionally mounted over the ACTUAL survey marker, which I looked for but couldn't locate.

Anyway, I'll log it to get it out of the way, since if I archived it someone would simply unarchive it again.

Hmmmmmmmmmm yep, i guess it's a trig.
or once was a trig.

had too much time to spare before work, so decided to walk up a hill i've never been to before. nice views Smile

Carefully picked a way up to GZ trying to avoid grass seeds, still collected a few though. Very little left of this trig, still good views.

What else to do on a public holiday but climb a hill and claim another GCA Trig! Nice easier climb than a lot of Trigs, with added bonus of GC cache nearby also. Lovely day for it and managed to disturb plenty of kangaroos at the GZ, oops. TFTT Smile

Well that explains it - I wondered why we would have come most of the way up a hill for a nearby GC, and not logged the GCA - but it was only published after our visit. Found with McPhan as the final cache of a a morning of attempts, and this the only find!

397. It's a bit of concrete with a bolt in it. I'm not overly bothered if it is or isn't a trig - it does get a smiley and those logging it have no qualms either.

TFTC and the Charlene.

GCA 198 - 4096.

Catching up on another Trig visited when finding a nearby GC Cache - in this case "Just for the Views #8" on 19 March 2010 - and yes great views for sure !!

Boring - been there, done that.

Fairly easy walk but not an easy find. A trig point definitely exists here (geographically and leigslatively) but I thought I was going to have to list this one as did not find. But, I managed to find the tell-tale bolt sprouting from the concrete on an otherwise featureless hill (unless of course bolts in concrete are a naturally occurring feature).
This one definitley has some historical links. The 'Neighbour Trigonometrical Station' is repeatedly referred to as a reference point for defining boundaries of ACT districts in the 'Districts Ordinance 1967'. http://www.legislation.act.gov.au/a/1967-10/19670524-44787/pdf/1967-10.pdf

At GR 848834 on the Tuggeranong 8727-3S topographic map, Neighbour Hill can be seen as can a district boundary referred to in the District Ordinance, running SW from the top of the hill.

The position of the bolt is listed as a Trig Station on the ACT Planning and Land Authority Survey Control Marks Database http://www.actpla.act.gov.au/tools_resources/maps_land_survey/surveying_data/surveyors_information/survey_control_marks

Boring – I was up here for a *FTF* on the 23/12/09 searching for the ACTPLA marked trig. The bolt was easily found, but I didn’t publish it! It is simply not a Trig. I must say – I am surprised that I even took a photo of it! (Attached) – I think that was because of my surprise of the accuracy of the location. This should be moved to GCA as a virtual cache! I’m not sure where the discussion on GCA trigs is going, but so far it seems that the consensus is that bolts are not trigs.
