Description

A Trig Point is a virtual cache which requires a cacher to locate the Trigonometric Station at GZ.

This trig is visible from the road (A2) from Smithton to the Tarkine and Marrawah. We spotted it driving past beside a water tank.

A trig point (also known as a Trigonometric Station) typically consists of a black disc on top of four metal legs or concrete pillar, resembling a navigation beacon. It is also accompanied by a metal disc, which is located directly below the center point of the tripod or on top of the pillar itself.

Trig points are generally located at the top of hills or points of prominence in the landscape. Many provide unique views and challenges, with some being difficult to get to.

These points were regarded as valuable to surveyors, providing reference points for measuring distance and direction, and assisting in the creation of maps.

To log a find on the Geocaching Australia website, you will need to include a picture of the trig point, along with your GPS receiver and (preferably) yourself. Long distance / telephoto type pictures are against the spirit of this cache. You are encouraged to leave a description of your journey in your log to help others in finding the trig point.

The name Christmas Hills is used for convenience. The real name is unknown, if known please feel free to edit.

Was out this way for work today so I stopped to snap a photo on my way past. Couldn’t get to the trig but a photo was taken from the road to fulfill requirements to log this one. TFTC

This trig is easily seen from the Highway but a little bit harder to get to the base. However can be photographed and logged from the fence line. TFTC

Found on the Rice Custard Tour of the NW.
A quick stop on the side of the road. The was a muggle mowing the lawns on a rine-on mower and the neighbour arrived home just as we pulled up.
Got the photos and left.

Travelling around Australia and spending a few months in Tasmania.

Staying in Smithton and today we headed over to Arthur River to go on the Original Arthur River Cruise. Great day out and we managed to find 4 Trig points whilst out and about.

ST127 added to trig point name. This trig is officially known in the DPIW Listmap database as "Christmas Hills"

We had seen this trig point on a number of occasions but had been uncomfortable about logging it because of it's distance from the road. Today we visited the land owner and got their permission to come onto their land and go to the trig point. The photo added to the Gallery contains two images: the first is of one of us at the trig point; the second is of the survey button on the ground.

Driving from Arthur River back to Launceston to spend a few days with our daughter and grandson before returning to Adelaide. Easy to spot when you know where it is.

Actually missed this one while heading west, then remembered: "Oh wait: the trig!!" but we'd already passed it, so made sure not to make the same mistake on the return journey! Kept our eyes peeled and spotted it on the hill peeking out behind the water tank.

07-Jan-12
driven past this thing for years on the way to mums and now have a reason to take a photo of it.

It's not a requirement in general that you can touch the trig.

Near enough just may well be good enough in a lot of instances.

However: "Long distance / telephoto type pictures are against the spirit of this cache"

Log at your own discretion

If that's the case then this one nearby, Wedge Plains (http://geocaching.com.au/cache/tp5611) is in the same boat. I thought it was the same trig when I was first looking it up.
I think if you can clearly see it without a telephoto lens it's okay. We have a lot of water tank and top of building trigs you could never touch in NSW.

We were driving from Smithton to the Tarkine and Dismal Swamp when we spotted this trig on the right side of the road about 10km out of Smithton. Hard to believe it hasn't been logged before. You can get a fair shot of it although it's on private land you can clearly see it.
