Logs

Found this one around a year ago, as I am going back next week i logged in to see what else was around and only now realised i had not completed the logs from the past (seems to be a regular occurrence unfortunately). We use this area to train navigation and bushwalking for our Outdoor Leadership students and it is always a good place to come back too. a challenging but beautiful walk out here, it has been good to see the bush slowly regenerating after the destructive fires of 2019 / 2020 but it has made the undergrowth very thick and challenging to push through in some places. We also have a Kanangra to Katoomba challenge planned for a couple of weeks too so hopefully that will be possible.
The trig is a large piled rock cairn that is still in pretty good condition

This would be the one of the harder ones completed that I had to go to a trig and find my own way. Parked just off the Kanangra Walls road and did the walk in. I used my old first Garmin gego GPS and bid the cookie crumble. I glad I did. Used my new one to get me there & it has good mapping which helped. The walk was a bit of a zig zag but a good flat walk. The last 150 metres is a total different story all together. As jonnosan says in his log dated 16-Mar-13 “When I was about 100m from the trig, I hit some thick ti tree scrub, but I poked around for a while and found a reasonable way through.” Well for me it was more like 150 metres out and I recon between 2013 and now it has gotten thicker. Got through but at times I was like a bulldozer. It was very hard to pick a way through – at times I found a rock shelf only to hit the wall again. Looking at logged photos of jonnosan and Tyreless not much has changed around trig. An interesting trig completed with a good view also. They also logged the brass State Survey pin 5m away I didn’t pick this up while I was there but when I went through my photos taken I found it when I zoomed in – how could I have missed it – my end of my walking stick was only 300 or so millimetres away, second last photo. The terrain and difficulty were earned in the last 150 metres. In the end a very nice walk and view found also the trig. Clan Griffin

A lovely walk through mostly open bushland was rewarded with a nice intact cairn with great views over Kanangra-Boyd National Park.
There is a smaller cairn 10m from the trig and a brass State Survey pin 5m away. The vanes are scattered around.

Found at 2:20 pm.

16-Mar-13
I went for a trig hunt out Kanangra way, this was my first objective.
After close scrutiny of the topo, I picked a ridge-line to follow up and parked on Kanangra Walls Road. This is great country to walk in - widely spaced eucalypts, all sorts of interesting rock formations, hardly any scrub and no leeches.

When I was about 100m from the trig, I hit some thick ti tree scrub, but I poked around for a while and found a reasonable way through.

I found a big cairn, and next to it, a smaller cairn with what looked to me like it was once a wooden post holding the trig vanes, since burnt down, rather than the metal pole as described. I also found a survey mark (unnumbered) and the rusty vanes on the ground.

Total trip car to car was about an hour. Don't let the fact it is all 'off track' put you off, it is very easy and open country to walk in.
