This one has been on the radar for a long time so it was very nice to finally tick it off, even better I got to go to Foody as well. 7 of us from my bushwalking club completed a traverse of Dharug NP taking in Haycock, Foody, the Group 6 aboriginal site and part of the Mills Creek circuit. Great day out.

Lovely old trig, although as Tyreless said the stones have been somewhat displaced. Amazing that the mast and vanes are still in place. Lovely location and well worth the effort to visit.

When I found Foody trig a month ago I did a bit of reconnaissance, checking out the ridge from the maintenance trail that leads out to Haycock trig. On the map it looked OK.

So I returned today to finish the job. Parked at the beginning of the maintenance trail just before 7am. Up past the locked gate then further up as the trail gains around 200m elevation.

The trail levels out and it takes a little less than an hour to get to the point where the bush bashing starts. The trail is pleasant with some nice views.

Then off into the bush for a typical bash along a ridge. The topography is mostly level and there are no rock climbs involved. The vegetation varies - sometimes quite difficult to push through but the last 500m is OK. It took me 1.5 hours of bush bashing to get to Haycock.

The coords are spot on and the trig was spotted through the bush from about 20m away. The mast and vanes are still in place but the cairn itself is a bit of a shambles. There is a small plaque attached to the vanes which shows that the mapping authority has visited at some time in the past. Other than that the age of the various components is difficult to estimate although I think the cairn is original, ie: 1880s. There are also some interesting "convict" shaped markings on two of the vanes (see photos). I don't know what the small wooden board attached to the vanes is for as I've never seen one before.

The walk back was a bit faster and I got back to the car just after 11.30am. Found at 9:23 am.
