Description

A Trig Point is a virtual cache which requires a cacher to locate the Trigonometric Station at GZ.

A trig point (also known as a Trigonometric Station) typically consists of a black disc on top of four metal legs or concrete pillar, resembling a navigation beacon. It is also accompanied by a metal disc, which is located directly below the center point of the tripod or on top of the pillar itself.

Trig points are generally located at the top of hills or points of prominence in the landscape. Many provide unique views and challenges, with some being difficult to get to.

These points were regarded as valuable to surveyors, providing reference points for measuring distance and direction, and assisting in the creation of maps.

To log a find on the Geocaching Australia website, you will need to include a picture of the trig point, along with your GPS receiver and (preferably) yourself. Long distance / telephoto type pictures are against the spirit of this cache. You are encouraged to leave a description of your journey in your log to help others in finding the trig point.

The original collection of trig points has been sourced from Geoscience Australia and may contain inaccuracies.

Please respect local laws and regulations when searching for trig points. If you believe that a trig point is located on private property or in a dangerous location, you may archive the cache, by clicking on Log this Cache and place an "Archived" log on the Geocaching Australia website.

If you feel that you can add to the description of this trig point or adjust the difficulty / terrain ratings, please feel free to edit this cache and amend the information suitably. Vandalism of the cache description or other information will result in your account being terminated.

Day trip from Lorne to find just 3 trigs, but I managed to find three more along the way. Stay tuned for those to be published. Not much left of this one.

#GA2556 - 11:30; After driving down to Melbourne to bring the geostudent and her friend back for uni, Sol de lune flew in to join me for a days caching and the return journey to Canberra. Our plan was to make finds in as many of the dragonZones in which we were yet to make a find as we could. Today it was time to return home to Canberra, but we would be taking the long way home via Colac, Ballarat, Bendigo, Shepparton and a few points in between. Spotted this trig as being nearby to our last stop, so headed along the dirt road to the top of the hill. It seems the landscape has changed since the original photos, with a couple of white posts being all that remains of the old facility Think Anyway, grabbed a snap and a GC cache and headed back to the highway. Headed in here on the way home after a couple of days GCA caching in Melbourne with LuckyL10n. Found the trip point ok, but the other thing we saw in other cachers photo's has certainly gone.

Thanks, another trig of the list....

Looking at my stats after finally getting a smiley on that pesky day of the year, I dithered over which challenges to concentrate on next, and realized a bunch of hidden months from the early days were covered by hides not too far out of Ballarat. In Victoria, I can potentially tick off twelve of the twenty blank months in the chart, and nine of those are within striking distance... I think we have a winner.
One of the aforementioned caches is in the Enfield State Forest, which gave me the opportunity to pick up a few bonus caches on the way.
