Description

Red Rock Trig Point

A Trig Point is a virtual cache which requires a cacher to locate the Trigonometric Station at GZ.

A trig point (also known as a Trigonometric Station) typically consists of a black disc on top of four metal legs or concrete pillar, resembling a navigation beacon. It is also accompanied by a metal disc, which is located directly below the center point of the tripod or on top of the pillar itself.

Trig points are generally located at the top of hills or points of prominence in the landscape. Many provide unique views and challenges, with some being difficult to get to.

These points were regarded as valuable to surveyors, providing reference points for measuring distance and direction, and assisting in the creation of maps.

To log a find on the Geocaching Australia website, you will need to include a picture of the trig point, along with your GPS receiver and (preferably) yourself. Long distance / telephoto type pictures are against the spirit of this cache. You are encouraged to leave a description of your journey in your log to help others in finding the trig point.

The original collection of trig points has been sourced from Geoscience Australia and may contain inaccuracies.

Please respect local laws and regulations when searching for trig points. If you believe that a trig point is located on private property or in a dangerous location, you may archive the cache, by clicking on Log this Cache and place an "Archived" log on the Geocaching Australia website.

If you feel that you can add to the description of this trig point or adjust the difficulty / terrain ratings, please feel free to edit this cache and amend the information suitably. Vandalism of the cache description or other information will result in your account being terminated.

Sophoutloud and I are on a bit of a road trip on our way to Lennox Head for a conference, it gave us an excuse to have a mini holiday and take a few days to get there. So for us that always means finding caches and trigs on our travels. This trip so far has been great as we have had the chance to visit a bunch of beautiful Northern New South Wales Beach towns. Being the off season they have been pretty quiet and even though it is June, much warmer than at home in the Hawkesbury. We had decided that tonight Red Rock was going to be our home. We arrived and got our campsite, it is pretty quiet but I imagine it gets very busy during the peak season here. After setting up we took a nice stroll up the beach to the Red Rock Headland and could see the trig from quite a way out. We headed up the hill to get a quick snap of the trig. Being here right on sun set was quite amazing the light was amazing and I spent the best part of the next hour taking about 2000 photos of the waves crashing and some fisher men nicely silhouetted by the setting sun. A really stunning part of the country and a great spot to find a trig.

My visit to Red Rock today was very different to the last visit! Last time I was here it was chaos. Sooooo many people, everywhere. I showed up to check out the geology and the Earthcache which I did and then promptly left haha. Today I showed up for the Trig and was surprised that it was quiet. In fact so quiet I decided to book an unpowered site. I had other plans but this will do. I was the only one in that part of the grounds. So, now I’m setting up camp in the day time which is just weird haha. Lots of spare time now so an early dinner and a beer is in order then a quick trek out to the Trig.

This is a nice location when it’s quiet. As I was walking out to the beach an echidna wandered across the track then heard me approaching and took off back into the scrub. Ha! That’s my second echidna sighting. Both times I’ve seen an echidna in the wild I was Trig hunting Smile

About 11pm I wandered back up to the Trig to see if I could get a nice nighttime image. When I left camp the sky was clear but by the time I hit the Trig I noticed cloud hiding some sky. I set my iPhone camera to maximum exposure time and took lots of images, some of just the sky and some I tried to get a silhouette of the Trig. A few turned out really well considering the cloud and light pollution. Thanks for the cache Smile

Despite spending almost every school holiday at Arrawarra, I have only been to Red Rock a handful of times. The kids loved the beach but were less than impressed with the wind. A quick find then back into the sheltered water.

This place has always been just a liiiiitle bit out of the way so I never quite got here. That is till today. I've seen this trig twice before now. Once whilst watching TV and once a couple of weeks ago whilst just North finding the Station Creek Trig with the best adventure companion. Said adventure companion mentioned that we should go to Red Rock some time soon and check it and the trig out. And so we did it. I loved the rocks here. That mangled one just off the headland has some pretty impressive curves. Unfortunately all the photos I took up here were over exposed and some camera notification popped up on the screen that I couldn't get rid of till restarting the phone. So you'll just have to check out MattyRx's pics to see the lovely views and weather, and us enjoying it all. I tell you what, have a photo of the full moon rising out of the ocean a few hours later and a few miles North...and one of Matty down at the EC.

Decided to get away for the day, and the plan was to have a look at a couple of trigs not far from out last adventure down this way, only a couple of weeks away. It’s been a long while since I was in Red Rock - nothing was familiar, which was nice to experience something new in our local area.

We caught a glimpse of the trig from our last adventure to Station Creek, and knew this should be a pretty easy find. We made out way up the headland and the trig was there waiting for us. Seems to have turned into a memorial for a bloke named Jay. Once the formalities were completed, we had a look around and found the nearby GC cache, then made our way down and admired the rich red rocks that this place is named after.

Such a nice town, I’m glad this trig bought us here today.

Just when we thought we weren't going to find a trig for the Olympics Challenge we arrived at this one. Should have guessed we'd find a trig at such a location. No name plate any more, someone's removed it to put in a memorial plaque. A beautiful spot to visit with sensational views.

Beautiful Headland! Enjoyed the walk on New Years Day!

The third Trig I've managed to add to GCA. Found in Red Rock on the NSW North Coast whilst searching for a couple of traditional caches. Well worth the visit and a beaut spot for a camping holiday by the beach.
