Description

A trig point (also known as a Trigonometric Station) typically consists of a black disc on top of four metal legs or concrete pillar, resembling a navigation beacon. It is also accompanied by a metal disc, which is located directly below the center point of the tripod or on top of the pillar itself.

Trig points are generally located at the top of hills or points of prominence in the landscape. Many provide unique views and challenges, with some being difficult to get to.

These points were regarded as valuable to surveyors, providing reference points for measuring distance and direction, and assisting in the creation of maps.

To log a find on the Geocaching Australia website, you will need to include a picture of the trig point, along with your GPS receiver and (preferably) yourself. Long distance / telephoto type pictures are against the spirit of this cache. You are encouraged to leave a description of your journey in your log to help others in finding the trig point.

The original collection of trig points has been sourced from Geoscience Australia and may contain inaccuracies.

Please respect local laws and regulations when searching for trig points. If you believe that a trig point is located on private property or in a dangerous location, you may archive the cache, by clicking on Log this Cache and place an "Archived" log on the Geocaching Australia website.

We don't often get to interstate trigs. This one is modernised with UTM detail, grid convergence and point scaling factor, but they're barely readable. Thanks GA.

27-Jul-17
After sorting through various aspects of the dz trophy points it looked like another rather long day trip was in order. The prime objective being a cache in the southern midlands area then collecting any other available GA caches on the way back home with side road diversions where needed. After days of abysmal cold weather up in the NW, the forecast for today over the midlands was for a frosty start then a generally clear morning.Set off at 8am in very over cast and freezing conditions but further south the skies had cleared for a rather sunny morning. After 2 3/4 hrs driving, gz for the main cache 'C u on the highway' was closing in. After signing the log it was time to head back north calling in to find this trig cache. Came from wrong angle initially but soon found the way in. Grabbed required photo...TFTC GCA cheers ST.

I do not know how many time I have driven past and not stopped in to Ross to find this Trig point and the other caches.
Today I on my way home from finding a mixed bag of other caches.
After getting some food from a local bakery and finding another few caches in Ross I found this trig.
As a general rule I'm off finding the harder caches so it was nice to find an easy one.

I had completed the GC multi when the rain started to get heavier. Noticed this trig and a GCA cache weren't too far from me, so dropped by for a quick find and sign before heading back on the road. had to have a couple of goes at this one as the iPad was flat and the iPhone wasn't much use either. Had to out wait a muggle which, fortunately, wasn't long as his GF appeared from the toilets.
Once clear, I was able to find the cache in quick order.
Thanks for the hide!

We came across this uniquely placed Primary GPS Station next to the 42° South information display next to the Town Hall and former Council Chambers at Ross. An attached plaque gives the coordinates in two formats and the height above sea level to three decimal places (ie 1mm) which we haven't seen in Tasmania before. Unfortunately we cannot use this for GA4411 Australian Height Datum Markers as it doesn't include these words or the abbreviation AHD but we can log a TP find.
