Description

A Trig Point is a virtual cache which requires a cacher to locate the Trigonometric Station at GZ.

A trig point (also known as a Trigonometric Station) typically consists of a black disc on top of four metal legs or concrete pillar, resembling a navigation beacon. It is also accompanied by a metal disc, which is located directly below the center point of the tripod or on top of the pillar itself.

Trig points are generally located at the top of hills or points of prominence in the landscape. Many provide unique views and challenges, with some being difficult to get to.

These points were regarded as valuable to surveyors, providing reference points for measuring distance and direction, and assisting in the creation of maps.

To log a find on the Geocaching Australia website, you will need to include a picture of the trig point, along with your GPS receiver and (preferably) yourself. Long distance / telephoto type pictures are against the spirit of this cache. You are encouraged to leave a description of your journey in your log to help others in finding the trig point.

The original collection of trig points has been sourced from Geoscience Australia and may contain inaccuracies.

Please respect local laws and regulations when searching for trig points. If you believe that a trig point is located on private property or in a dangerous location, you may archive the cache, by clicking on Log this Cache and place an "Archived" log on the Geocaching Australia website.

Stainless steel pin with brass plaque.

#GA2827 - 13:50; After an early morning arrival in Devonport, the geohoney and I disembarked from the Spirit of Tasmania II with a bit of time on our hands before we headed to Port Sorell for breakfast with friends. Finally located a bakery in Latrobe after failing to do so in Devonport, but we did find a couple of caches there. After a nice breakfast in our friends' new home, it was time to head off again for Hobart. After a few more finds we made it to Launceston and then along the Midlands Highway to Campbell Town. Parked the geomobile and while the geohoney got some retail therapy, I headed across the park for this trig. Interesting US Geological Survey Benchmark right next door. 27-Jul-17
After sorting through various aspects of the dz trophy points it looked like another rather long day trip was in order. The prime objective being a cache in the southern midlands area then collecting any other available GA caches on the way back home with side road diversions where needed. After days of abysmal cold weather up in the NW, the forecast for today over the midlands was for a frosty start then a generally clear morning.Set off at 8am in very over cast and freezing conditions but further south the skies had cleared for a rather sunny morning. After 2 3/4 hrs driving, gz for the main cache 'C u on the highway' was closing in. After signing the log it was time to head back north calling in to find this trig cache. Came from wrong angle initially but soon found the way in. Grabbed required photo...TFTC GCA cheers ST.

Hi sharnies tribe, found this while in the area doing the nearby multi with Lil Rafa and in the company of AlbyDangles who'd already found both.
We had a very early morning start down south, made our way up the icy highway to attend the "Th' lost loot o' Mary Hyde" event at Trevallyn Tailrace Park, for some piratey fun and cacher catch-up, but you knew that. Nice to catch up with you again, and enjoy Lonnie's cold foggy morning!
On the way home we stopped to grab various caches, this being one.
THANKS for the trig. Will post pic as soon as l overcome my technological difficulties.

25-Feb-16
Travelling around Australia and spending a few months in Tasmania.

The house is parked at Campbelltown so today we were able to explore both Ross and Campbelltown. Lovely historic areas. Very Happy

We loved bimbling about exploring and poking around in all the shops and reading historic signs. Needless to say we took loads of photos, and were pleased that we got back home before it started to rain again. Laughing

Is missed this one earlier as there's a GC multi that starts at the same spot. When I realised it was here, I had to stop and quickly get the required photos, much to my wife's annoyance.

I'm a bit confused here, though I'll freely admit I'm a TP "newbie". This benchmark seems to have changed numbers. I believe I was at the right spot (plough sundial, been there before for cachey stuff) but my photo shows a rather roughly stamped ST1170 (almost 11170) rather than the clearly shown ST1160 in all previous photos. Is Tassie being resurveyed under our noses or did someone miscount? Will happily delete log if I've performed a newbie stuff up.

31-Dec-13
Keep refinding this one as I keep deleting the photos off my phone!

11-Nov-13
2nd trig today in Campbell Town. A quick find and then tried to work the sundial but there was nothing happening on a cloudy day. Thanks.

31-Oct-13
776. Made a mess of getting to this one due to the GPSr telling me I could drive almost there. Only as I got cornered did I see it was private property. A quick reverse and then a hop over to the trig.

TFTT and the soup.

Found on our return from Ross after a caravanning weekend away.

An easy find enjoyed the sundial and amazed at how accurate it was. TFTC

I've been to this very spot before, as the first step of a multi.
This was one of a string of caches found in CT today.
Thanks.

07-Feb-13
Found easy.

01-Feb-13
I didn't go and "find" this one on the day of the picnic, but on Friday evening when I was headng north again, I wandered over to the sundial while I was having a bite to eat. The evening sun was making good shadows and I must admit I was amazed when it all worked and the time correlated with my watch! I had looked at it another time, but it was interesting to have another go. It took me a few minutes to notice the actual disc relevant to this cache, though. Thanks sharnie's tribe.

26-Jan-13
Found this one after attending the awards picnic event in Campbell Town. I had seen the device from a distance but didn't go and have a look at it until later that evening, though my partner had a play with it when the sun was still out. A great site, very interesting, thank you!

Hi Sharnie's Tribe
An early morning start to a Budge and OldSaint field trip around the North of the State and a meet up with MakkyBrown; the day culminating with attendance at the event in Launceston later in the evening. Thanks to Budge for a great days caching.

Found this cache at 0743hrs whilst making preparations for Saturdays event. Great park and I always love looking at the nearby "old" building.
TFTC and cheers
OldSaint.

Thanks Sharnie's Tribe for getting this Primary GPS marker onto GA - a very worthy addition. The site marks one of 8 viewing locations around the world for the Transit Of Venus in 1874. Scientists from all around the world, including many from the USA, gathered at Campbell Town for the event. We are not aware of the circumstances but a local farmer in 2004 created an interesting version of a sundial at the location from farm bits and pieces. The location is a site of scientific significance and is recognised both by Australia and the USA - hence the Tasmanian Primary GPS marker and the US equivalent. We came across this location just under three years ago as it is the first point in the multicache "GC16VP4 Look At The Time Son". We had photos of each of the markers and the instrument from our previous visit but returned today so that our GPS could be included. The composite photo added to the gallery shows the two survey markers and the instrument for tracking The Transit Of Venus in 1874. Thanks Sharnie's Tribe for getting this one into the GA database.

16-Jan-13
Found this primary GPS station in Campbell Town in Valentine Park near the sundial that was used to follow the transit of Venus across the sun in 2004. There is also a US Geological survey benchmark nearby that gives the elevation above sea level as 654.77 feet.
