Description

A trig station with commanding views

A trig point (also known as a Trigonometric Station) typically consists of a black disc on top of four metal legs or concrete pillar, resembling a navigation beacon. It is also accompanied by a metal disc, which is located directly below the center point of the tripod or on top of the pillar itself.

Trig points are generally located at the top of hills or points of prominence in the landscape. Many provide unique views and challenges, with some being difficult to get to.

These points were regarded as valuable to surveyors, providing reference points for measuring distance and direction, and assisting in the creation of maps.

To log a find on the Geocaching Australia website, you will need to include a picture of the trig point, along with your GPS receiver and (preferably) yourself. Long distance / telephoto type pictures are against the spirit of this cache. You are encouraged to leave a description of your journey in your log to help others in finding the trig point.

The original collection of trig points has been sourced from Geoscience Australia and may contain inaccuracies.

Please respect local laws and regulations when searching for trig points. If you believe that a trig point is located on private property or in a dangerous location, you may archive the cache, by clicking on Log this Cache and place an "Archived" log on the Geocaching Australia website.

Wow. This was such a rewarding walk. Picked a beautiful summer's morning to take a stroll to this trig with RLD4963. Amazing panoramic views. Photo attached.

It is exactly 1 year since this cache has been logged. We puffed and puffed like old locomotives but eventually made it up. There was some very long grass to trample through at the top but that was easy enough. Even better views than from the cache below as the views are everywhere.
As I type up the log from home, We are siting here having being battered by a passing storm. Who'd have thought, after the beautiful sunshine this morning. TFTC

Visiting the area finding caches that have been published since our last visit and this was one of them. Great view TFTC

A very lovely spot with great views.
The grass is a bit long which made it a little harder.

The grass was quite high in parts and we were a bit confused on arriving at a fence, but rereading the calverts Hill log cleared that up.  It was not until we got home that we could confirm that the trig was registered on the Australian geocache site.

On a pleasant late winter day we decided to walk along Cremorne Beach to Calverts Hill and score some geocaches. On reaching the Calverts Hill cache  we noticed a  log entry from Budgietas about continuing up to the trig on the top of the hill.  We thought that this would mean that the trig was on the Geocache Australia site and so perhaps we should go on to see.

After completing the cache down the hill, it was time to get the trig point up the hill.
Wow. I thought Reborn was joking when he said the grass was over his head. In some places it was at least a ruler length over mine. The only other place I've seen grass taller was on Bougainville Island back in 2000, just after caching started. that grass was higher than our Land Cruisers and sometimes nearly swallow them!!
Finally made it up to the top and got the required photos. The views are pretty speccie too!
Thanks for the trig!

After wading to the nearby cache through the waist-high grass in shorts, sandshoes and short socks, looking out for snakes, I headed further up the hill through HEAD-HIGH grass, just trying to make enough noise that the snakes would run away.
Excellent views from GZ - my attempt at a panorama is at http://photosynth.net/view.aspx?cid=e27e2cc9-d990-4aca-9001-0b868e8b9d29

Wow - what a great walk! And not a bad effort for a 105 y.o. dog! (Or something like that). We loved it. The views are amazing. Thanks whitewebbs. I love these types of caches.
PS. Your sunrise photo is incredible. (Also incredible to have gotten up early enough to get it!)

Of course this followed on from the Calvert's Hill geocache, as the track headed on up the hill ! Very Happy
However, the grass grew longer and longer as the track went up, and I'm in agreement with 2y'stassies - this certainly looks a snakey area..... much better tackled in the cooler months. Wink
And for future reference, the electric fence is not functional (at least not today !).
Finally arriving at the top for an obligatory photo or two, then walked/tumbled back down the hill ! Laughing
Thanks for the cache, whitewebbs ! Very Happy

As others have reported previously we found Calverts Hill cache first then continued upward exploring Calverts Hill Reserve and soon reached the trig point. The weather was glorious and the views were impressive. Thanks whitewebbs for providing the excuse for going there.

Having found the Calverts Hill cache, it was onwards and upwards to this trig point. The grass was surprisingly long making Mr y'stassie glad that this cache was being tackled now and not in the warmer months - we are not that keen on joe blakes. After one or two stops, the trig point was reached and the reward was outstanding 360 degree views. The one surprising aspect of this trig was that it didn't have a brass button under the beacon. Instead it had a square peg with a roofing nail to mark the spot as you would find when residential blocks are surveyed. the photo added to the Gallery shows our GPS at the trig point, and the marker underneath the beacon. TFTC whitewebbs and for bringing us to this wonderful vantage point.

Well, I think this cache has been a first for me. It is the first trig where I have walked from sea level to the top of a hill for a trig. Great views from the trig in 360 degrees directions. Actually, come to think of it there has been one other trig i have done near port Arthur that was from basically sea level to the top of a mountain, but there was no beach to walk across there!!!!

Hi whitewebbs
Had a GCA calendar day that needed to be filled today, so found this GCA cache to complete my GCA calendar - now totally filled! Thanks for helping me get this milestone.
The other reason for wanting a cache today was to honour my Dad's passing twelve months ago today. He was an avid bush walker and occasionly went caching in association with that sport. I dedicate this find to his honour and memory, my milestone as well.

Had planned to go down Rifle Range Road first but went the opposite direction to ensure a GCA find for the GCA calendar requirement.
This is quite a walk, the track being a little slippery in places due to recent rain. Walking through the "tiger" grass was interesting but saw no tiger! Wind was rife and a bit chilly, the waters were white-capped!
Views from here and along the track are tremendous.
Arrived at and logged the trig at 1112hrs.
Now on to "Calverts Hill" through the "pampas grass" to make another find.

Thanks for a momentous cache and the completion of my GCA calendar, a tremendous walk and great views.
TFTC and cheers
OldSaint.

I visited this trig point after logging whitewebbs cache nearby. The breeze was cool, but the sun was warm, so I ended up dawdling back to my car enjoying the sunshine. After passing the corner fencepost on the way up the hill I followed the fence line, where there was almost a trail leading upwards. On the way back down I just took a diagonal line direct back to the corner post. In both cases there were areas where the grass was up to my shoulders - I'm not sure that I'd like to walk through here in the summer months!

Found while hiding a cache nearby. Great views from the top of Calverts Hill.
