Description

A Trig Point is a virtual cache which requires a cacher to locate the Trigonometric Station at GZ.

A trig point (also known as a Trigonometric Station) typically consists of a black disc on top of four metal legs or concrete pillar, resembling a navigation beacon. It is also accompanied by a metal disc, which is located directly below the center point of the tripod or on top of the pillar itself.

A lovely old timber pyrimid frame with tin holding it together at the top, a rotton piece of timber is all that remains of the discs that would have adorned the top.

Trig points are generally located at the top of hills or points of prominence in the landscape. Many provide unique views and challenges, with some being difficult to get to.

These points were regarded as valuable to surveyors, providing reference points for measuring distance and direction, and assisting in the creation of maps.

To log a find on the Geocaching Australia website, you will need to include a picture of the trig point, along with your GPS receiver and (preferably) yourself. Long distance / telephoto type pictures are against the spirit of this cache. You are encouraged to leave a description of your journey in your log to help others in finding the trig point.

To access this Trig start at Geilston Creek Road and make your way to GC491TY Rocky Meehan ( read logs for directions ). Once at the ridge you will see a boomgate and a track to the SE follow it until you come to a clearing S42 49.496 E147 22.955. Take the track heading East, the track to the SE goes to Flagstaff Hill 508/060.

You will come accross a fence at Eagle Hill  S42 49.071 E147 23.685 follow it to it's corner post S42 48.871 E147 24.396 (DO NOT climb over the fence),  then walk straight to the Trig (there is a track if you follow the fence to the North a little.

BRING water as there is none on the way.

Hi

Further to the archiving. According to theList, the land is under a Conservation Covenant. From my understanding, this is private land held for conservation

Wow what a view. Accessed this cache from Meehan 26. Just kept following fire trail down then turned left, followed another track that headed up the hill all the way to the cache. TFTC

Well, with my mother away, I decided that today was the day to tackle the Meehan range.
I started at the end of Belbins road and started along the track and up the first hill, first of many. My 18.01 km walk (including walking up 202 flights of stairs) found 9 caches and his one cache. The first caches found were the Meehan series. Then I went on to the trig at Craigow hill. The views from here were amazing. So amazing I placed a new cache that will be released shortly.
Then on to the cache at rocky Meehan walking through the back tracks across the tops of the ridges. The tracks at times was hard to follow and seemed to disappear in a few places. Finally arrived at rocky Meehan which had been a aim to get for a long time. Then it was another walk up a hill(I was sick of going up by now) to a nice series along the ridge. Finally down to the challenge cache that I have not qualified for yet, but I signed the log in advance.
The last walk down the hill was very hard, it was steep and slippery. I think by the time I got back to the car, I was more shuffling than walking. A huge day out and great that this cache could be part of it. Tftc

The views from this trig are amazing

I attempted to get to this trig, but came to a solid logged gate, with three house numbers on it and a keypad to enter a number in to use the road. This road has a name - Kings Road - so it appears to be a public road. I am very surprised this is allowed. If all my neighbours and I decided to block our street, I can't imagine that would be allowed. What's the difference, if this is a named road?
Needless to say, I didn't get to the trig.

I set off for a "jog" but it ended up being a jog/walk. I jogged where I could, and walked where I couldn't - whether that was due to gradient, rocks or slipperiness. Anyway there's not much difference in pace between the two. As I'd headed off with no prior planning, I was most pleased for your ocuple of waypoint suggestions Alby. Where the track was indistinct in a couple of spots, I thought where did it disappear to, but soon refound it. But I have to admit, I also climbed the fence. There's a couple of perfect climbing/step rocks placed just where they need to be, and the nice gate at the other side, no signs and even a cairn on the way. I came here first then went to Flagstaff Hill on my way back. It was just what I needed to blow out a few cobwebs. Thanks, Alby.

Now that Mr W has more time on his hands he decided to take a walk on a glorious winter's day. Parked the car at Geilston Creek Rd and headed off. Great views from various locations. An enjoyable walk.

Now others have found it I will log a find.

11-Nov-13
I parked near the end of Flagstaff Gully Road and took a roundabout route to arrive at Rocky Meehan on the way to this cache. I have a good map of this area stored in my phone so didn't have any trouble finding my way from here on to the trig point. Not having read the cache description in it's entirety before heading off I did jump the fence near to Eagle Hill, which allowed me to continue following the track that was marked on my map. I had initially deviated from the track in order to go to the top of Eagle Hill and thought that I had ended up on the wrong side of the fence somehow. Before reaching the trig point (and near to the fence corner that Alby mentioned) there is a gate (with no lock) that made it easier to continue towards the trig point. I had noticed some hoof prints on the track and passed a number of sheep that were no doubt responsible for such prints. The route back seemed much shorter than the walk in, but that may be related to the downhill gradient Smile

Hi Alby
Am now standing at the trig
You are one fit son of a gun. I tip my my hat to you my friend!
Got here at 1345hrs
Went in from Belbins Road at Cambridge because it was shorter as the crow flies - not sure it ended up that way - but had a good walk anyway - thank you!
