Description

A Trig Point is a virtual cache which requires a cacher to locate the Trigonometric Station at GZ.

A trig point (also known as a Trigonometric Station) typically consists of a black disc on top of four metal legs or concrete pillar, resembling a navigation beacon. It is also accompanied by a metal disc, which is located directly below the center point of the tripod or on top of the pillar itself.

Trig points are generally located at the top of hills or points of prominence in the landscape. Many provide unique views and challenges, with some being difficult to get to.

These points were regarded as valuable to surveyors, providing reference points for measuring distance and direction, and assisting in the creation of maps.

To log this Trig Point post a picture of yourself touching the tower, extra points if it's while your on the top platform.

ST82 is the tower

#GA2848 - 18:15; After a busy day caching my way from Devonport through to Hobart yesterday, it was time today to catch up with a few friends. A long lunch was followed by a drive down to Opossum Bay to have a look at the old house and to collect a couple of the local caches. The trip to the Eastern Shore completed, we decided to head down through Taroona for Kingston and I stopped to grab a snap as we passed the Shot Tower. I stopped and got the needed photographs. I didn't go up because there was a fee for this, but I wanted to for the exercise.

06-Aug-16
Driving towards the tower from Hobart, I didn't spot until just about there. I thought I might have seen it a couple of bends earlier as it is quite impressive.

On out way home from Kingston we asked if the girls (aged 4 and 7) would like to climb up the Shot Tower, the original answer was no but as we got nearer that changed to a yes! We paid our money ($20 for a family ticket), watched a short video and then started up, counting as we went. The girls did a great job and made it up without complaint. We enjoyed the views and then headed down again (counting to double check) all the way to the bottom before heading back up to the shop to claim a prize for the girls. A nice family outing.TFTC

On the way back to Hobart we called in to grab this one, when Mrs SSRat was a little girl she used to search at the bottom of the tower for shot, something you can't do anymore Sad

Dim and dark and deserted this winter afternoon - almost suits the ominous tower ! Very Happy

When I was a child, my mother took me to the shot tower. I had absolutely no problems going up or down, in fact I did it twice. But being pushed to go outside and around the top of the tower, when all of the platform and railings were made of WOOD, sorta gave me the creeps and that is probably when I developed my fear of heights.
Today, some 30 something years later, I returned to the tower.
Lets just say that an irrational fear of heights is just that - irrational. So irrational that I didn't even make it to the top. Maybe it had something to do with the fact that the steps flex A LOT, the step height is just a bit on the short side, the steps aren't level, you can see right through them and when exactly was all this woodwork replaced last? I did get a picture of me touching the tower at the highest point I made it to, and one outside just to be sure.
I doubt I'll ever go there again, except for a meal, which I indulged in after my abortive attempt.
Give me a rope securely attached to an anchor point and a harness and I'll be fine.

Whilst in the area today, we had the opportunity to visit the Shot Tower again. A range of photos, collated into one image, has been added to the Gallery. You may be able to pick out Mrs y'stassie on the viewing platform on top, the only way to get to touch the tower as required. TFTC Albydangles.

Found another of these "non trig" trig's.

Really different from the four posted sign with a circle on top, but certainly worth visiting.

09-Oct-13
I grew up very close by, and could see the tower out my bedroom window, and have been to the top many times, though I didn't go up today.

16-Sep-13
Visited here this morning in the company of cinmi16. I too was expecting to find a disc or something marking the trig point, but will settle for a photo of tower if that will suffice.

16-Sep-13
Very cleaver cinmi16 I like that Smile

16-Sep-13
Did this one on morning off with wilco..

Good job Old Saint

There was a bit of confusion about what the trig was so modified the cache description after you found it.

I accept your find and congratulation on the FTF.

Hi Alby
Got this one on the way home from a trip to Marrawah.
Have been here many times before and have even climbed to the top.
Love the old house next door.
My visit this time occured at 1725hrs.
Guess you always meant for a shot of the Tower to be the claim to the find and that's what I've done.
Great cache and thanks for the *FTF*
Cheers OldSaint.

More details can be found at the SurCom site at
http://surcom.dpiw.tas.gov.au/surcom/jsp/site/mark_search_public.jsp?cmd=search&searchFor=packId&radio=on&packId=st82&limit=ex
There is nothing on the first page of information about markers but the Location/Reference Mark diagram states "82 CENTRE OF MASONARY SHOT TOWER AT TAROONA". There isn't any reference to a disc or other object. Hence, we would take the trig point as the centre vertical line of the Shot Tower at the base and that a photo of the Shot Tower with your GPS would be sufficient to claim a find.

11-Sep-13
Is the trig point just the tower itself, or is there a marker somewhere?
