Description

A Trig Point is a virtual cache which requires a cacher to locate the Trigonometric Station at GZ.

A trig point (also known as a Trigonometric Station) typically consists of a black disc on top of four metal legs or concrete pillar, resembling a navigation beacon. It is also accompanied by a metal disc, which is located directly below the center point of the tripod or on top of the pillar itself.

Trig points are generally located at the top of hills or points of prominence in the landscape. Many provide unique views and challenges, with some being difficult to get to.

These points were regarded as valuable to surveyors, providing reference points for measuring distance and direction, and assisting in the creation of maps.

To log a find on the Geocaching Australia website, you will need to include a picture of the trig point, along with your GPS receiver and (preferably) yourself. Long distance / telephoto type pictures are against the spirit of this cache. You are encouraged to leave a description of your journey in your log to help others in finding the trig point.

The original collection of trig points has been sourced from Geoscience Australia and may contain inaccuracies.

Please respect local laws and regulations when searching for trig points. If you believe that a trig point is located on private property or in a dangerous location, you may archive the cache, by clicking on Log this Cache and place an "Archived" log on the Geocaching Australia website.

If you feel that you can add to the description of this trig point or adjust the difficulty / terrain ratings, please feel free to edit this cache and amend the information suitably. Vandalism of the cache description or other information will result in your account being terminated.

The trig can be reached by following the track up Mount Schank and taking the left path around the old volcano.  Very impressive views into the crater. Mount Schank is the youngest volcano in Australia erupting as recently as 5000 years ago.  It still looks like it could give off a bit of steam.

The original trig has been removed and only physical remains are the footings and Survey Mark number 377022.

I have taken the walk up to the crater rim a few times and even been down into the centre. That was a killer walk coming back up again. Thankfully a few years ago the steps were redesigned on the main walk up from the car park to the rim and that is a lot easier now.I found a photo on my camera I took of the survey plaque when it was still there but I did not include my GPS in it. Looking on another memory stick I found a photo of my GPS I took on the crater rim 175 metres from the plaque position so I am hoping this will be sufficient to claim a find.

While out in the area getting some caches we seen this marker so we had to log it, what a fantastic area this is, so we'll worth the visit for sure.

Today in very windy and sometimes rainy conditions, we ventured to the Mt Schank Trig Point. There were certainly great vuews here, even on a day with poor weather. Two photos have been aded to the Gallery: the first is of our GPS at the survey marker; the second is of one of the remaining legs of the survey beacon.

Needed to do one uphill walk today and this was it. Well worth the walk though for the views at the top were spectacular. Can't say we've ever stood on the rim of a volcano before. Thanks.

Wow, what a view. Even the kids thought it was worth the climb to stand on the rim of a volcano.
Amazing spot.

Found on our "Making Memories" tour of Mainland Australia.

We thoroughly enjoyed visiting Mount Schank and finding the geocaches in the area. The view was amazing and standing on a rim of a volcano is a memorable experience.

We were holidaying in Mt Gambier, stopping at Mt Schank to grab a couple of caches and a great view, and as I returned along the rim of the crater, there was, of all things, a survey mark.
Difficulty 1 as it is right there on the edge, but terrain 4, as it was a pretty steep climb up a fair few steps.

I'm surprised this can be logged three different ways! Survey mark, trig point and a waymark too! I can't claim an FTF as bucketeer was here before Yurt, and Yurt created the Trig point cache, but I did get First to log a waypoint. how complicate Doh d!

On our trip to SA we climbed Mount Schank which was brilliant - an extinct volcano which still looks like a volcano. Found the survey mark and the footings of the old trig. This wasn't published so here it is. Enjoy - it's a great walk. We walked right down into the crater (there's a GC cache there which we missed) which is a hard walk but worth it.
