Description

A trig point (also known as a Trigonometric Station) typically consists of a black disc on top of four metal legs or concrete pillar, resembling a navigation beacon. It is also accompanied by a metal disc, which is located directly below the centre point of the tripod or on top of the pillar itself.

Trig points are generally located at the top of hills or points of prominence in the landscape. Many provide unique views and challenges, with some being difficult to get to.

These points were regarded as valuable to surveyors, providing reference points for measuring distance and direction, and assisting in the creation of maps.

There are, however, a number of trig points which are not beacons.

To log a find on the Geocaching Australia website, you will need to include a picture of the trig point, along with your GPS receiver and (preferably) yourself. Long distance / telephoto type pictures are against the spirit of this cache. You are encouraged to leave a description of your journey in your log to help others in finding the trig point.

The original collection of trig points has been sourced from Geoscience Australia and may contain inaccuracies.

Please respect local laws and regulations when searching for trig points. If you believe that a trig point is located on private property or in a dangerous location, you may archive the cache, by clicking on Log this Cache and place an "Archived" log on the Geocaching Australia website.

If you feel that you can add to the description of this trig point or adjust the difficulty / terrain ratings, please feel free to edit this cache and amend the information suitably. Vandalism of the cache description or other information will result in your account being terminated.

Additional Information

This State Trig point is located on a ridge above one the bends on the so-called "99 Bends" stretch of road leading eastwards from Queenstown.  Parking is available at S42 04.294 E145 34.163 and is best accessed when leaving Queenstown (rather than when heading to Queenstown) because there is limited visibility for oncoming and following traffic. From there it is a short walk up a steepish slope with sections of fine loose gravel and very smoth rock which would be quite slippery in wet weather. The ST1112 brass button is fixed to a rock and close by is a red star picket with a State Trig label affixed.

As this State Trig does not have an official name, this cache has been named "Queenstown  ST1112". Further information can be obtained from the SurCom database from the Queenstown ST1112 link.

Managed to visit this Trig point in apalling conditions. Could hardly stand still to get a photo. Slipped and slided back down to the geo-vehicle and continued up the bends for a GA traditional and the last stage of an Ad.Lab. Surprised Photo included. Clan Minotaur

Found this one while heading to meet up with some fellow cache on the west coast.

25-Jan-18
We were heading to Zeehan with stainless steel rat to meet TazScout (and unbeknown to us at the time Swampy and Toolbox) and made the quick stop here on our way down the 99 bends to grab this one. Even though it was a hot day the ground was still damp and slippery under foot.

19-Sep-17
Have been here many times before

25-Apr-17
This was one of many caches I found on a caching trip with Swampy.
I parked at the bottom of the hill and walked up but Swampy couldn't resist the temptation to drive up.

An easy trig to get to with good parking. Great view of the hills from up there.

Against the recommended suggestion we did this one as we headed into Queenstown today. After a short scramble the required photos were taken and then we safely negotiated our way back on to the road. Was a bit tricky though. Thanks.

13-Feb-15
Found this trig whilst heading back home after an excellent trip around the state with muggle Steve. He tends to only like the trigs with a 360 degree view.
Thanks for the find.

We tracked down this State Trig point whilst doing a round trip from home, down the Murchison Highway to Queenstown, along the Lyell Highway and Marlborough Highways to Miena and then home again. We were glad that the weather was fine as it could have been quite slippery. A composite photo of the brass disc, the red pole with the State Trig sign and a general view of the area has been added to the Gallery.
