Description

Trig points typically consist of a black disc on top of four metal legs or concrete pillar, resembling a navigation beacon. They are generally located at the top of hills or points of prominence in the landscape.

This is one of only three church spires in Tasmania which have been designated as State Trig points and the final of these to be listed as a trig cache.

To log a find on the Geocaching Australia website, you will need to include a picture of the trig point, along with your GPS receiver and (preferably) yourself.

If you feel that you can add to the description of this trig point or adjust the difficulty / terrain ratings, please feel free to edit this cache and amend the information suitably.

Additonal Information
As this State Trig does not have an official name, this cache has been named "St Mary's Spire ST655" which is in line with the other two spires listed as trig caches. This State Trig survey control marker is listed in the SurCom database as the "top of spire" of St Mary's Church, Hagley. Further information about this State Trig can be found from the link
http://surcom.dpiw.tas.gov.au/surcom/jsp/site/mark_cont.jsp?cmd=Site%20Summary&id=10683&datum=5.

St Mary's Church was opened in 1862, wiht the foundation stone being laid by the first Tasmanian-born premier, Sir Richard Dry. The spire and tower were added in 1932. It sits amongst very nicely kept gardens. There are two other caches in the immediate vicinity: "Say One for Me" GA0145 and "In search of Sir Richard" GC3C8PV.

A nice drive by with a small detour

I don’t think I’ve seen a spire being used as a Trig before. There have been a few ‘firsts’ on this Tasmanian adventure. Thanks for the cache Smile

Hi and thanks for the trig cache.
Taking advantage of the Hobart show public holiday, and making a 4 day geocaching trip West, and then North West, with AlbyDangles.
This is one we found on day 4 as we meander homewards targetting drive bys. Great old church, although for a Sunday morning, it's eerily quiet. But at least that's conducive to geocaching.
Pic attached.
Cheers, EPs.

A 10 day trip to Tasmania with a lot more caching then initially expected, but I enjoyed every minute of it! This was one of the many caches I found and enjoyed. Can't wait to get back here and do it all over again, there are so many great places in Tasmania.

Travelling around Australia and currently in Tasmania.

Today we travelled to the local area of Westbury and stopped in here before heading home.

Interesting history and beautiful church.

No climbing of the spire for us today.

A quick detour form Launceston on my way home to go grab this trig.
I've been here 3 or 4 times prior but never took a picture of the spire.
This is also a test of the GCA field note upload....

One of 25 caches we found today as we tick off caches that have been published since our last visit.

A drive by trig - got to love that and a very grand one too.

06-Sep-14
This is certainly a trig with a difference. Plus you can drive right up to it which is a bonus in my book. Maybe even nab another cache or two here as well. All options ticked, muggle free (usually), a peaceful spot & a lovely old building too. What more could a cacher ask for?

This is what we love about geocaching, actually stopping and visiting the places than so many people just drive past. this day was 30+ and the shade around the church was most welcome.

13-Nov-13
A quick grab of the required photo as we head home from a couple of days caching. Thanks.

05-Nov-13
A very early start to get to a cache at Low Head close to low tide gave us the opportunity to call into this lovely church to get the required photos. It was a little overcast at the time we visited but a really great day is promised. Two photos have been added to the Gallery: the first is of one of us with GPS this morning; the other is a composite of some photos we have taken on a previous visit. This spire trig point is different to the other two in that it is the only one of the three which has a thin metal pointer on top of the spire as the target - St Joseph's at Fingal has lost it's metal pointer and St George's at Battery Point has the apex of the dome as the target. Thanks for publishing this very beautiful State Trig Dippy.

04-Nov-13
A quick detour on our way to Launceston. We've been here before but didn't mind coming back to take the required photo. This is a very peaceful spot (except for the man with the ute removing a fallen tree). TFTT

Lovely photo Dippy. The balance between the light of the late afternoon on the stone work of the church and the rhododendron is superb. Thanks for posting the caches for the only three church spires in Tasmania which are State Trig points. We will need to make a visit soon.

Detoured on my way NW last night and the church looked stunning at sunset. It's imposing and majestic, the views are lovely, the gardens are well-kept, it actually looked very English. I really enjoyed visiting again.
