Description

Rankin Old TS?

Official name of this Trig Station as per NSW Department of Lands is: Rankin Old.

Serial number is: TS?.

Last inspected on: December 4, 1974.

Elevation is: 977 meters.

The remains of the original cairn can be easily seen right next to the new "Rankin" trig, the locating pin is still in the center of the stone circle. This was depiled on December 4, 1974 when the new trig was constructed

A trig point (also known as a Trigonometric Station) typically consists of a black disc on top of four metal legs or concrete pillar, resembling a navigation beacon. It is also accompanied by a metal disc, which is located directly below the center point of the tripod or on top of the pillar itself.

Trig points are generally located at the top of hills or points of prominence in the landscape. Many provide unique views and challenges, with some being difficult to get to.

These points were regarded as valuable to surveyors, providing reference points for measuring distance and direction, and assisting in the creation of maps.

You are encouraged to leave a description of your journey in your log to help others in finding the trig point.

The original collection of trig points has been sourced from Geoscience Australia and may contain inaccuracies.

Please respect local laws and regulations when searching for trig points. If you believe that a trig point is located on private property or in a dangerous location, you may archive the cache, by clicking on Log this Cache and place an "Archived" log on the Geocaching Australia website.

Sophoutloud and I spent a few days camping with friends at Hill End and then because of the very wet weather that came in on Sunday night they decided to bail and head home early so we had the day to fill by ourselves so what better way to do that but explore a new area and bag some fresh Trig points around Hill End and Bathurst. I have to say all the Trigs we found today were in Amazing condition, I am not sure wether they get repaired here more often or are just vandalised less out here. Either way it was great to see. We took a little bit of a tricky way into this one, maybe private property but still not sure. once we found the trig we went back out the right way and it was much easier. Love how looking for trigs sends us to these cool reserves

Hill End and Mudgee weekend April 2018. I set out late on Thursday after a small battery issue. I only stopped once before a night at Bummeroo ford. Friday took me to Orange via many spread out caches between Oberon and Bathurst. I spent the night at Macquarie woods. Saturday started foggy and then warmed up. I was heading to Hill end, and did make it, but I had to give up on the Bridal track due to a rockfall. Late in the evening I did find a spot along the Turon river and the very bumpy northern section of the Bridle trail. Sunday had me finishing the TRLT trail from Mudgee to Gulgong and a few missed ones in tyhe middle of nowhere. The last day was a simple drive home from Sofala. A great weekend !

Two for the price of one here !

Thanks
Albida

Took a few minutes to spot. Not exactly easy to spot.

Chalk this find up to roger3w...the second of my weekend trip where a bit of searching on his behalf revealed an old trip near a new one. Took me a few seconds to spot the plug, but there it was.....and all was good.

Glad I came out this way...an interesting spot.

Absolutely amazing find, thanks to the scuffing investigation of rogerw3!

We'd noticed the old circle of stones from the former Rankin Trig, next to the spectacular new one . . .

rogerw3 went over to see if the location pin was still lying around and, lo and behold, it was still firmly in place!

Quite a lot of fun, to go together with our enjoyment of the modern Rankin Trig.

Five stars for the unexpected discovery!

Found today with pjmpjm during our foray in the Bathurst area.
This one was quite a surprise, the old cairn remains are easy to see but the original locating plug is still there to be seen.
