Description

The original Mundoonen trig right next to the newer one.

A Trig Point is a virtual cache which requires a cacher to locate the Trigonometric Station at GZ.

A trig point (also known as a Trigonometric Station) typically consists of a black disc on top of four metal legs or concrete pillar, resembling a navigation beacon. It is also accompanied by a metal disc, which is located directly below the center point of the tripod or on top of the pillar itself.

Trig points are generally located at the top of hills or points of prominence in the landscape. Many provide unique views and challenges, with some being difficult to get to.

These points were regarded as valuable to surveyors, providing reference points for measuring distance and direction, and assisting in the creation of maps.

To log a find on the Geocaching Australia website, you will need to include a picture of the trig point, along with your GPS receiver and (preferably) yourself. Long distance / telephoto type pictures are against the spirit of this cache. You are encouraged to leave a description of your journey in your log to help others in finding the trig point.

The original collection of trig points has been sourced from Geoscience Australia and may contain inaccuracies.

Please respect local laws and regulations when searching for trig points. If you believe that a trig point is located on private property or in a dangerous location, you may archive the cache, by clicking on Log this Cache and place an "Archived" log on the Geocaching Australia website.

If you feel that you can add to the description of this trig point or adjust the difficulty / terrain ratings, please feel free to edit this cache and amend the information suitably. Vandalism of the cache description or other information will result in your account being terminated.

The trig is just to the left of the Mundoonen trig plinth.  A large circle of stones with the plug still there in the centre.

With a day off and the eagerness to get out for a cache or two, Wink I headed out for a run along the back-roads and Hume-HWY between Yass and Gunning. I chose this route to collect caches that has popped up, to avenge DNF’s and to collect caches I missed last time, I did this run (back in 2016). I found a good mixture of caches both in sizes and types of hides. Most were quick finds and all caches were signed and replaced except for three DNF’s and one NA. Out of 45 attempted caches, which is a mixture of both GC and GCA, I ended up finding 41 of them. I would like to thank all CO’s of the caches I found and for allowing them to bring enjoyment to me and the rest of the caching community. Big Grin TFTC’s and TFTTP’s Big Grin

Whilst in the area late last year we went off the Hume Highway and parked our car in a safe place. Then we took our time to walk up a rather steep track (aka "rough road") to look for a CGA Traditional cache and to visit the two Trig Points, TP2489 Mundoonen and TP6837 Mundoonen Old. It is interesting to see the two trig points so close to each other. We have just found the photos we took at the time. Three photos of TP68379 Mundoonen Old have been added to the Gallery: a close view of the survey marker pin; Mrs y'stassie standing close to the survey marker pin; and the view from the trig point towards the new Mundoonen Trig Point. Thanks Geocaching Australia for the cache.

Walked up the track to the top, a pleasant day for a walk. Not a lot left of the original trig.

Headed out for a quick afternoon of caching with fitzy_1965.

Our main aim was to clear out some GCA in the Yass area. Last two for the day for me were these two trigs. Quick snap before heading home.

It is a veritable treasure trove of caches up here - two trigs, one GA traditional and two GC traditionals. WELL worth the visit.

Old trig, or just the survey mark for the main one? Nothing much has changed here in the 30+ years that I've been visiting this hill (except for the mobile phone towers!)

I was out around Yass with Sol de Lune and we decided to end the morning by coming up here for the second trig. Not much of this one left, but clearly a survey marker.

Thanks

#GA555 - 16:15; I decided to head out on a caching run this afternoon into nearby NSW. I picked up a couple of GC trads along the way and after initially taking the wrong turn off, soon found my way on track to this cache and its nearby cousin. The track to the top was interesting in places after recent rains, but I managed to get to the top unscathed. Took a snap, then over to the nearby trig for more of the same. GCA 950 - 8580. Found the 'new' Trig a few years ago with Sol de Lune - on 12 Jan 12. Have been up here a few times for caching.

Interesting that the 'old' one is here as well !

I came up to find Mundoonen trig and that was completed successfully with the well-maintained white plinth found. However next to it there was a circle of stones which indicated a dismantled cairn. In the centre was the plug in the stone which showed this was the original. A nice find.
