Description

A trig point (also known as a Trigonometric Station) typically consists of a black disc on top of four metal legs or concrete pillar, resembling a navigation beacon. It is also accompanied by a metal disc, which is located directly below the center point of the tripod or on top of the pillar itself.

Trig points are generally located at the top of hills or points of prominence in the landscape. Many provide unique views and challenges, with some being difficult to get to.

These points were regarded as valuable to surveyors, providing reference points for measuring distance and direction, and assisting in the creation of maps.

To log a find on the Geocaching Australia website, you will need to include a picture of the trig point, along with your GPS receiver and (preferably) yourself. Long distance / telephoto type pictures are against the spirit of this cache. You are encouraged to leave a description of your journey in your log to help others in finding the trig point.

The original collection of trig points has been sourced from Geoscience Australia and may contain inaccuracies.

Please respect local laws and regulations when searching for trig points. If you believe that a trig point is located on private property or in a dangerous location, you may archive the cache, by clicking on Log this Cache and place an "Archived" log on the Geocaching Australia website.

If you feel that you can add to the description of this trig point or adjust the difficulty / terrain ratings, please feel free to edit this cache and amend the information suitably. Vandalism of the cache description or other information will result in your account being terminated.

Continue on 4wd track to the right once you reach Nelson Bay. Track will lead to Sundown Creek and nearby trig.

Well it was a little bit of an adventure to get here. Glad we had the 4WD. Fantastic spot. Photo attached.

"Thank you for the cache.

Left MrsD at the nearby rocky bay while I went for a scramble up the hill to find the trig.
After a bush bash up I walked back down the track bac to the car.

MrsD and I were up the NW on a four day weekend.
Today we went down the West Coast to Temma and I was allowed to find some caches on the way, this was one of them.

Found on Saturday 24 October 2020 at 1422

Bit of fun playing 4 wheel driving on the way in, parked on the grass when the road became very soft sand. What an amazing spot to find if only because there is a trig in here. The big Tiger seen on the road coming in was a bit scary and given it's always Mr TazScout who has to do the bushbashing well.....

Found on the Rice Custard Tour of the NW.
We were travelling OK until we got to the Private Property signage. We reversed and took the track to the right and ended up on the northern side of the trig point.
This area also suffered some burning from the bushfires of Jan 2016. Picking my way up to the trig was easy. Staying clean was a different matter.

Today we explored Smithton and beyond and this was one of several trigs we found. A short walk through charred shrub to find this one.

The third day of a four day trip racking up 1535kms. Starting at Huonville to Ulverstone (Night One); to Marrawah (Night 2); Arthur River back to Burnie (Night 3) and day four to Launceston and back to Huonville - a great trip!

This was the 8th today, 47th cache of the trip.

A great drive to this cache; first time ever here - the Subi even handled the sandy part of the track very well.
The views here are tremendous.
Followed the small animal tracks to the Trig - makes it easier than trying to bash through the scrub
Kept to the right on the way back and had a reasonably clear way out on the small animal tracks
The effort in getting to this cache was well worth it.

Sainted the cache at 1009hrs.
TFTC and cheers

there's no easy way to this ex-trig! Last 20m is a real bush bash.

It was one of those magic days on the West Coast. Clear blue sky (not a cloud to be seen), a warmish breeze, a very light swell off-shore and waves crashing onto the rocks. It was perfect conditions to return to Nelson Bay after nearly three years. After finding GC6672 Nelson Bay, we continued along the track to look for this cache. We took one wrong turn, ending up at a sign which stated "Private Road". After backtracking a little, we found the right road. Although it was a little rocky in places and there were some deep pools in the dips, we got to a parking spot without any hassles. We didn't attempt to cross the loose sand at the entrance to the Sundown Creek Reserve as we really didn't have a contingency plan if we got stuck in the sand (apart from possibly logging the GA locationless cache "Axled"!!). We were really impressed with the views at Sundown Creek - what a lovely area. We then headed off and got within about 60m of GZ. We were then confronted by scrub. We tried a number of alternative access points but gave up - we just made a direct line got GZ, bush bashing our way in. If there is easier access, we didn't find it. We did, however, find the Trig Point, appropriately identified by pink tape (courtesy of Sirius Tas we assume). After taking the necessary photos, we returned to our car and retraced our route. Within about 200m we came across a quite large copperhead snake very earnestly crossing the road. It didn't seem to notice our approach - we wondered if it was hunting. Once it became aware of the car, it turned to face us, then thought better of it and retreated from where it had come. Thanks Sirius Tas for having this Trig Point included in the GA list of Trig Points and for bringing us back to the Nelson Bay area - and we could not have come back on a better day.
