Description

A trig point (also known as a Trigonometric Station) typically consists of a black disc on top of four metal legs or concrete pillar, resembling a navigation beacon. It is also accompanied by a metal disc, which is located directly below the center point of the tripod or on top of the pillar itself.

Trig points are generally located at the top of hills or points of prominence in the landscape. Many provide unique views and challenges, with some being difficult to get to.

These points were regarded as valuable to surveyors, providing reference points for measuring distance and direction, and assisting in the creation of maps.

To log a find on the Geocaching Australia website, you will need to include a picture of the trig point, along with your GPS receiver and (preferably) yourself. Long distance / telephoto type pictures are against the spirit of this cache. You are encouraged to leave a description of your journey in your log to help others in finding the trig point.

Please respect local laws and regulations when searching for trig points. If you believe that a trig point is located on private property or in a dangerous location, you may archive the cache, by clicking on Log this Cache and place an "Archived" log on the Geocaching Australia website.

If you feel that you can add to the description of this trig point or adjust the difficulty / terrain ratings, please feel free to edit this cache and amend the information suitably. Vandalism of the cache description or other information will result in your account being terminated.

 Additonal Information
This State Trig survey control marker was identified in the SurCom database as West Point and consists of a domed bolt fixed into the position of an old drill hole. Apparently the original Trig Point was a navigation beacon which has since been removed and Reference Mark 2 from that original is now recognised at the State Trig point.  Further information about this State Trig can be found from the link West Point.

"Thank you for the cache.

This would have been a lovely light house in its time.

MrsD and I were up the NW on a four day weekend.
Today we went down the West Coast to Temma and I was allowed to find some caches on the way, this was one of them.

Found on Saturday 24 October 2020 at 1100

Came to this part of the West Coast to go on the Arthur River boat cruise but it was fully booked for today and tomorrow so we had no option but to cache instead!!!!
Unfortunately we didn't have our e-trek [left it at a cache in Launceston a few weeks ago] with us and we had to resort to caching with the old Garmin which was taking us in large circles at this one.
After deciding that there was only one thing it could be we took the required photo and then went down to watch the surfers. Some impressive waves but they didn't seem to be making the most of them.
Thanks.

Raining, windy and almost dark made this very hard to photograph. Trying to shelter my camera by spreading my coat almost had me sailing off the rocks when a gust hit me!

19-May-16
Found on the Rice Custard Tour of the NW.
Beginning to loose count of how many times I've been here (and not logged the trig).
Today I got it between rain squalls.

Today we explored Smithton and beyond and this was one of several trigs we found.

Love this location and nice to return to find this cache. Not as windy today as on previous visits.

We were able to confirm the existence of this State Trig point on a recent visit to the West Coast. It would appear that the original State Trig was the centre of the navigation beacon as the coordinates for ST883 coincide with the centre of the concrete base on which the navigation beacon was located. two photos have been added to the Gallery. The first shows ST883 RM2 as the domed bolt in the rock. The second shows the centre of the concrete slab on which the navigation beacon one stood with our GPS indicating 0.0m. It is always a great to visit this rugged part of Tasmania.
