Description

A Trig Point is a virtual cache which requires a cacher to locate the Trigonometric Station at GZ, and to photograph it (and themself).

Official Code: TS10690

A trig point (also known as a Trigonometric Station) typically consists of a black disc on top of four metal legs or concrete pillar, resembling a navigation beacon. It is also accompanied by a metal disc, which is located directly below the center point of the tripod or on top of the pillar itself.

Trig points are generally located at the top of hills or points of prominence in the landscape. Many provide unique views and challenges, with some being difficult to get to.

These points were regarded as valuable to surveyors, providing reference points for measuring distance and direction, and assisting in the creation of maps.

To log a find on the Geocaching Australia website, you will need to include a picture of the trig point, along with your GPS receiver and (preferably) yourself. Long distance / telephoto type pictures are against the spirit of this cache. You are encouraged to leave a description of your journey in your log to help others in finding the trig point.

The original collection of trig points was sourced from Geoscience Australia and may contain inaccuracies. (This one was noticed when driving by)

Please respect local laws and regulations when searching for trig points. If you believe that a trig point is located on private property or in a dangerous location, you may archive the cache, by clicking on Log this Cache and place an "Archived" log on the Geocaching Australia website.

If you feel that you can add to the description of this trig point or adjust the difficulty / terrain ratings, please feel free to edit this cache and amend the information suitably. Vandalism of the cache description or other information will result in your account being terminated.

Height Measured: 426 m

Had to walk up the hill a bit to get the shot.

On a circular drive around Merriwa, Cassilis and Wollar and we spotted Wollar TS on approach. Finding a parking spot, we walked around but couldn't get a clear line of sight of the trig and we weren't sure about crossing the fence for this one. In the end we walked along the road and eventually spotted the trig and took some photos.

THAT is definitely what you feel like saying when you get to within about 5 m of the trig station. You can see a white metal pole easily from the road (Ulan Wollar Rd), and depending on the light the black semi-circular vanes. BUT, as you approach it from the base it disappears and when I saw it I think I even said "Wollar!!" (I suppose that I knew what the local road was called, and subconsciously put 2 + 2 together)
I saw it as I was coming down Mogo Road to go back and around to Steelers Wheel, a GCA Virtual published in 2009 for which I was FTF !!! I carefully went through the barbed wire fence and was fascinated by the hollows eroded in the large boulders on the way up. Took a few photos.
Lovely to see the nameplate intact, as I didn't have a map to possibly identify it by.
When at the top I saw quit a few cars from our weekend group of Pathfinders that had been hiking and camping in the Goulburn River National Park. Took a few more photos then headed off.
