Description

A Trig Point is a virtual cache which requires a cacher to locate the Trigonometric Station at GZ and to photograph it. Official Code: TS4773

A trig point (also known as a Trigonometric Station) typically consists of a black disc on top of four metal legs or concrete pillar, resembling a navigation beacon. It is also accompanied by a metal disc, which is located directly below the center point of the tripod or on top of the pillar itself.

Trig points are generally located at the top of hills or points of prominence in the landscape. Many provide unique views and challenges, with some being difficult to get to.

These points were regarded as valuable to surveyors, providing reference points for measuring distance and direction, and assisting in the creation of maps.

To log a find on the Geocaching Australia website, you will need to include a picture of the trig point, along with your GPS receiver and (preferably) yourself. Long distance / telephoto type pictures are against the spirit of this cache. You are encouraged to leave a description of your journey in your log to help others in finding the trig point.

If parking beside the Nelson Bay Road please be careful.

On our way home from a trip to Fingal Bay - should we give this one a go - we've cruised past countless times after all. We figured Sunday afternoon would be a good time to sneak through the cultural centre carpark, so drove in there. The caretaker was just locking up, but was OK with us parking in the driveway, and cutting through and up the sandy slope, he was a friendly dude.
Once at the top we felt like we were in someone's yard, it looks like it gets mowed occoasionally....

After spending most of the daylight hours indoors over the last two days I was happy to get out and try to find some more trig 'stations'. Tho the 'guard' at "Fort Stockton" (TS2093) wasn't wanting to acknowledge my presence, and then at North Stockton TP (TS3555) all I was able to find was a couple of small (20 x 20 cm) square blocks of concrete and some VERY RUSTY sheets of corrugated iron where the trig was indicated. (Well it was at 1900 hrs Rolling Eyes )
So I wasn't holding out much hope with this one since I had passed by it so many times and had never seen anything that could be construed as a trig. However I didn't realise that there is quite a steep slope of sand off the Nelson Bay Road. Battled my way up through lantana and bitou bush and sundry weeds. But when I got to the top there is an open area behind some houses below to the north. AND there is a nice concrete pedestal trig, with intact name plate (found @ 1945). Took a couple of photos then headed on home.
