Description

A Trig Point is a virtual cache which requires a cacher to locate the Trigonometric Station at GZ and photograph it.

Official Code: TS3205

A trig point (also known as a Trigonometric Station) typically consists of a black disc on top of four metal legs or concrete pillar, resembling a navigation beacon. It is also accompanied by a metal disc, which is located directly below the center point of the tripod or on top of the pillar itself. This one is a stone cairn, mostly dissembled but there is the typical box suitable for the wooden post.

Trig points are generally located at the top of hills or points of prominence in the landscape. Many provide unique views and challenges, with some being difficult to get to.

These points were regarded as valuable to surveyors, providing reference points for measuring distance and direction, and assisting in the creation of maps.

To log a find on the Geocaching Australia website, you will need to include a picture of the trig point, along with your GPS receiver and (preferably) yourself. Long distance / telephoto type pictures are against the spirit of this cache. You are encouraged to leave a description of your journey in your log to help others in finding the trig point.

Please respect local laws and regulations when searching for trig points. If you believe that a trig point is located on private property or in a dangerous location, you may archive the cache, by clicking on Log this Cache and place an "Archived" log on the Geocaching Australia website.

If you feel that you can add to the description of this trig point or adjust the difficulty / terrain ratings, please feel free to edit this cache and amend the information suitably.

Routing: From behind the Boat Harbour Reservoir TS there is a quite overgrown track that causes the walker to walk 'atilt' from the bushes growing in from one side. It is very easy to walk past the trig.

We got the nearby reservoir trig a while back - but rain stopped us pushing on through the scrub for this one. This one is a sad old trig, just a wasteland of rocks now....

followed the trail up from the reservoir, a very overgrown trail, to the scattered cairn trig

I missed the op to get this when I got the boat harbour TP. I was too tired to go back up there and decided to wait until the morning. Glad I did. the track is not well defined and my legs copped a scratching along the 500m trail. Not much to see when you get there too. Just some rocks. A bit sad, really.

Found on Australia Day while at Port Stephens. This was a relatively easy walk from the reservoir, through the trees towards GZ. It was nice and peaceful through here, so it was a lovely walk. Once at GZ, we found the hole where the trig should have been. TFTC GCA! Clan Cerberus

Spot on coordinates meant that I was able to find the dismantled (mostly) stone cairn. But there is enough left to see the rock box that would have held the wooden post. I pulled out a lot of loose humus until there was a firm but hollow sounding base. Found at 0640, on the first morning of Daylight Saving. This is about 300 m past the Boat Harbour Reservoir trig, and if you weren't looking for it I would think you would go straight past.
