Last inspected: No Data.

Elevation: 46m.

A trig point (also known as a Trigonometric Station) typically consists of a black disc on top of four metal legs or concrete pillar, resembling a navigation beacon. It is also accompanied by a metal disc, which is located directly below the center point of the tripod or on top of the pillar itself.

Trig points are generally located at the top of hills or points of prominence in the landscape. Many provide unique views and challenges, with some being difficult to get to.

These points were regarded as valuable to surveyors, providing reference points for measuring distance and direction, and assisting in the creation of maps.

To log a find on the Geocaching Australia website, you will need to include a picture of the trig point, along with your GPS receiver and (preferably) yourself. You are encouraged to leave a description of your journey in your log to help others in finding the trig point.

The original collection of trig points has been sourced from Geoscience Australia and may contain inaccuracies.

Please respect local laws and regulations when searching for trig points. If you believe that a trig point is located on private property or in a dangerous location, you may archive the cache, by clicking on Log this Cache and place an "Archived" log on the Geocaching Australia website.

If you feel that you can add to the description of this trig point or adjust the difficulty / terrain ratings, please feel free to edit this cache and amend the information suitably. Vandalism of the cache description or other information will result in your account being terminated.

I came into the city to have a long overdue lunch with some old workmates at The Rocks. I was early so wandered up to Observatory Hill to get a GC cache and found there was 3 GA ones here too ... bonus! The required photos were taken and hopefully GA Cacher uploads them ... it doesn't always do so.

I made a random visit to the observatory today, with the first task grabbing this important trig.

Had a few hours to kill between trains in Sydney today so decided to cache my time away. This was one of them. I came to visit the Observatory and had to cache whilst here of course. Found the nearby cache and then these 2 trigs. I thought, Oh that is definitely a trig point, but the plaque said it was a stand for something weatherish (please excuse my simplemindedness I can't remember at all). Took photo anyway and walked around to see what the structure behind it was. Plaque said THIS was the trig. ?!? Okay then. Click. Selfie taken. No climbing? Now that is disapointing. haha. I love climbing things, but I am weird like that. haha.

Visited and found 2:03pm. I was in the neighbourhood and always wanted to do these so finally got the chance. I didn't know I had to go inside to do this one and this is the first time that I've been in here. Usually I've been here after hours and it is closed. Never have I been inside and today that is going to change.

Needed a Dragon Zone worthy cache on this wonderful leap day of caching in the CBD. Walked here by a very circuitous route and snapped a great old trig I'd previously missed. Awesome.

10-Jan-16
I had wanted to Find a few more trigs that are also listed in the Australian Trig Points waymarking category, and this was one that fills another day on that Calendar.
An unusual set-up of blocks ('pyramid') for a trig point, but I will certainly 'take it'! Found at 1937, 10/1/2016

Well this explains why the GAcacher app didn't change the trig icon to a tick when I found the observatory mast trig on Saturday, turns out this one would be causing that issue. One day I shall return and I shall find it.

It's a good thing that there are locations like these where the history is preserved. Loved seeing it in the middle of the city!

My first visit to the Observatory and before heading inside, grabbed a pic of this trig. I did want to look closer but decided against it after reading the sign.

#GA454 - 15:55; I was out on a caching mission around the harbour today and headed back up to Observatory Hill to pick up this trig and a nearby multi. Certainly plenty of muggles about too. I not only located this cache, but found another nearby which looked suspiciously like an old trig too (see photo). TFTC Geocaching Australia Very HappyClan Cerberus

I have never been to the Sydney Observatory before. Its nice to visit some of these old historic places and learn a bit more about Sydney's past.

Thanks to my very good friend (He knows who he is!) I have been introduced to Geocaching and although I am not quite getting the caching bit I am however quite taken by the trigonometric Points.
Having heard my friend go on and on about their use and value as well as their history I have decided to log a few with my friend to hold my hand for now!
