Description

Official name of this Trig Station as per NSW Department of Lands is: Girrakool.

Serial number is: TS10637.

Last Inspected on: April 4, 1979.

Trig is a steel pillar with mast and vanes on a concrete square base.

A Trig Point is a virtual cache which requires a cacher to locate the Trigonometric Station at GZ.

A trig point (also known as a Trigonometric Station) typically consists of a black disc on top of four metal legs or concrete pillar, resembling a navigation beacon. It is also accompanied by a metal disc, which is located directly below the center point of the tripod or on top of the pillar itself.

Trig points are generally located at the top of hills or points of prominence in the landscape. Many provide unique views and challenges, with some being difficult to access.

These points were regarded as valuable to surveyors, providing reference points for measuring distance and direction, and assisting in the creation of maps.

To log a find on the Geocaching Australia website, you will need to include a picture of the trig point, along with your GPS receiver and (preferably) yourself. You are encouraged to leave a description of your journey in your log to help others in finding the trig point.

The original collection of trig points has been sourced from Geoscience Australia and may contain inaccuracies.

Please respect local laws and regulations when searching for trig points. If you believe that a trig point is located on private property or in a dangerous location, you may archive the cache, by clicking on 'Log this Cache' and placing an 'Archived' log on the Geocaching Australia website.

If you feel that you can add to the description of this trig point or adjust the difficulty/terrain ratings, please feel free to edit this cache and amend the information suitably. Vandalism of the cache description or other information will result in your account being terminated

We parked at the slab on the Pacific Highway. Looks like a regularly used drinking spot!
We were mostly able to follow fairly distinct animal tracks through the bush and up onto the rocks to find the trig. There is a surprisingly widespread view from up here. If you have contacts with the quarry this would be a much easier find, with the trig being 15-20m from the edge of the quarry. On the way back we tried to head straight for the road only to come against a barbed wire fence we hadn't noticed before. We followed it parallel to the road only to find that it abruptly ended about 10m from were we initially entered the bush. Seems kinda pointless, but it was in good nick so somewhat thinks it has a reason to exist.

Found this at about 7:34pm. The day had not gone to plan at all. I had originally wanted to do a trig elsewhere and a GC cache but as it turned out I got caught up with looking for a car. I tried to still do the trig but in the dark it was impossible to photograph for evidence so gave up. Then I had a mad scramble to still do my daily GC cache and after doing that I sat for a bit and noticed that this trig was potentially in striking distance. I took the geovehicle back along the highway and parked at a spot that I could start to access the bush. A climb over a barbed wire fence then followed and the serious bush bashing all the way to the Trig. I captured some photos of the trig at night. Now to get back to the geovehicle. That was just as much of a challenge again serious bush bashing and then I wasn't sure exactly wher I was I had to approach the road and found I was above a cliff and still had a fair bit to go along the road. Finally I got back to where I entered after crossing the barbed wire fence two more times.
I am glad the weather was cold and rain had been recent. I dread the thought of nasties lurking everywhere as I bashed through the scrub if it had of been summer.

Shankspony and I approached this one from the Old Pacific Highway. First obstacle was a fence but on closer inspection we realised it ended not far from where we were standing so we could walk right around it. A short bush bash and the trig was located.

Half-heartedly tried to access this from the east a few weeks ago, but private roads abounded! This time GeoGen and I went from Pacific Hwy side instead, and succeeded. The bush bash was a bit thick but not far. The trig is placed on a rock near a sandstone quarry. It has vanes and a concrete base. Someone's run off with the nameplate. Surprisingly good views glimpsed between the trees. Very Happy
