Description

A Trig Point is a virtual cache which requires a cacher to locate the Trigonometric Station at GZ.A Trig Point is a virtual cache which requires a cacher to locate the Trigonometric Station at GZ.

A trig point (also known as a Trigonometric Station) typically consists of a black disc on top of four metal legs or concrete pillar, resembling a navigation beacon. It is also accompanied by a metal disc, which is located directly below the center point of the tripod or on top of the pillar itself.

Trig points are generally located at the top of hills or points of prominence in the landscape. Many provide unique views and challenges, with some being difficult to get to.

These points were regarded as valuable to surveyors, providing reference points for measuring distance and direction, and assisting in the creation of maps.

To log a find on the Geocaching Australia website, you will need to include a picture of the trig point, along with your GPS receiver and (preferably) yourself. Long distance / telephoto type pictures are against the spirit of this cache. You are encouraged to leave a description of your journey in your log to help others in finding the trig point.

Please respect local laws and regulations when searching for trig points. If you believe that a trig point is located on private property or in a dangerous location, you may archive the cache, by clicking on Log this Cache and place an "Archived" log on the Geocaching Australia website.

If you feel that you can add to the description of this trig point or adjust the difficulty / terrain ratings, please feel free to edit this cache and amend the information suitably. Vandalism of the cache description or other information will result in your account being terminated.

Additonal Information
Swampy 10/2/15: This state trig does not have a beacon. It is a brass domed mushroom cemented into the top of the old concrete lookout, not the blue metal one. It involves a climb up so if you aren't good at climbing, bring a ladder!

bit tricky to get to the Trig marker

I was in the area after a newly published GC cache on which I made a FTF and decided to get this one. The area was petitioned off stating it was dangerous and as the area was under camera surveillance I did not enter but was able to get photos from the nearby lookout platform. Photo 1 of an overview with my GPS in the picture. Photo 2 a closer view of the structure. Photo 3 with the trig marker visible and circled. Very Happy

I was here earlier this year looking for a couple of caches but couldn't find this one until I checked out the log pictures and noticed where I went wrong, so back up on Mt George and I had to climb a small tree and got my dodgy thumb in the picture along with the trig point - I hope that is OK.

What a climb for a shorty!

26-Dec-17
I am so thankful someone had made a step making for an easier climb to the top of the lookout structure. Also thanks Swampy for the heads up on where the marker was. Photo attached.

Mt George has a few different caches on offer. Last time I was here I didn't know there was a trig here but I remember talking about it with Mrs 2y's so was ready for it today when we made it up the top of the hill. Someone had created a step so it was easier to reach the trig and SSR and I soon got our photos done.

#GA1396 - 16:25; After braving the weather for a few finds around George Town yesterday, decided to head for home without making the trip up the hill. Returned today and after scaling the heights and wandering around in circles a couple of times, realised there were more heights to scale if I was to log this trig. Made it all the way to the top to grab a snap, then back down and up the new lookout for a better view. TFTC Geocaching Australia Very HappyClan Cerberus

After a bit of touristing and a few caches on the lower levels we ventured to the top of Mt George for a view and a few more caches.

Always great views from the lookout. TFTT

Came here before but did not realise that I had to climb up to find trig. Bought son back and he did climbing for me. Now I can use this "find" for the Olympic Games competition. Found a FTF down the track and another 11 caches in the area so a successful day

14-Aug-16
Found even though the file didn't save on the Garmin. Spotted the red paint from the new lookout and then discovered that the little old lookout is missing a fairly essential component - steps. mr sharnie's tribe managed to get the attached photo using a nearby tree!

05-May-16
Left the rain behind in Launceston and found some caches that we missed on our last visit to the area.

Mr T took the challenge and climbed the tower for the required pic.

Arrived at GZ not having read the cache page and found it hard to find the trig. Globe light moment and thought how? Found a suitable object with which to get up there without too much difficulty - grill, combined with the small tree made for an easy ascent.
Sainted the cache at 1605hrs.
Enjoyed doing this cache.
Came back to this area and slept the night. BLOODY POSSUMS - still have their footprints over the front of the car!
TFTC and cheers

Now i know why 2y'stassies took a ladder!! Sorry about the photo but I was hanging off the side of the cement trying to take a photo with one hand while I clung to the rail with the other. Some great viewing platforms up here! Thanks.

Today a visit to the Mt George Lookout was on the agenda and we took a ladder. In hindsight, probably there was no need to as there was a rigging crew servicing the phone towers and we could have probably sweet talked our way into using one of theirs for a short time – their harness gear, however, would have been an overkill. The accurate description led to a quick find of this trig point marker. The photo added to the Gallery is a composite of three images: our GPS next to the survey marker; a closer view of the survey marker showing the number '528"; and Mrs y'stassie on the lookout, with our ladder at the side. thanks Swampy for your research and getting this State Trig added to the GA database.

Another one that I have been looking at, even though quite some time ago, I took the photo and then lost it. Maybe it is on Pete's phone?
No problems with cameras today as I had no less than 3!
It is a hard climb to get up there. *FTF*
