Description

A trig point (also known as a Trigonometric Station) typically consists of a black disc on top of four metal legs or concrete pillar, resembling a navigation beacon. It is also accompanied by a metal disc, which is located directly below the centre point of the tripod or on top of the pillar itself.

Trig points are generally located at the top of hills or points of prominence in the landscape. Many provide unique views and challenges, with some being difficult to get to.

These points were regarded as valuable to surveyors, providing reference points for measuring distance and direction, and assisting in the creation of maps.

To log a find on the Geocaching Australia website, you will need to include a picture of the trig point, along with your GPS receiver and (preferably) yourself. Long distance / telephoto type pictures are against the spirit of this cache. You are encouraged to leave a description of your journey in your log to help others in finding the trig point.

The original collection of trig points has been sourced from Geoscience Australia and may contain inaccuracies.

Please respect local laws and regulations when searching for trig points. If you believe that a trig point is located on private property or in a dangerous location, you may archive the cache, by clicking on Log this Cache and place an "Archived" log on the Geocaching Australia website.

If you feel that you can add to the description of this trig point or adjust the difficulty / terrain ratings, please feel free to edit this cache and amend the information suitably. Vandalism of the cache description or other information will result in your account being terminated.

Additional Information:

Park in the carpark at the end of Forest Road and walk up the track under the powerlines.

An arvo out and about collecting some caches

03-Feb-19
All that seems to remain of this trig is two concrete footing (presumably there were 3 or 4 originally) where the legs used to sink into the ground.
Came for a walk starting at MT Stuart to make non-smileys further from my home than previously.

10-Nov-18
Came up here for the walk. Not much sign of the trig here.

08-Jan-18
I've been here before and took lots of photos but I think they are on a munted file server and I can't get to them.
So today I popped up here after work and found this trig again.
Also found three of the RMs but not much else.
Thanks for the trig!

The GeoGSP and I love walking in this reserve and decided to head for a walk here today. Great weather, great views. Found the three supports for the trig (took photos of all three but logging using the app and can only attach one.

04-Nov-17
Found this trig almost by accident when I decided to pop up this little hill to check the view. Thanks!

While doing other GC caches in the Knocklofty Park, this Trig point was spotted, a Photo was taken for proof of visit.

28-May-16
Found on a beautiful autumn day in a reserve the GPS said was spot on GZ. A short sharp slog up the hill but not difficult. TFTT

I was reading about this on Facebook when Goose messaged me about it, so a very loose plan was forged to find this Trig at 'lunch'.
I turned up at the car park and found Goose's car there so rang him to see if he was coming or going and was pleased to hear they had just got to the top so I rushed up to the Trig to grab some pictures for this very important date.

Had a bit of a chat and made plans for the weekend (caching fancy that Laughing )

18-May-16
To celebrate 'Geocaching in Australia Anniversary' SSR and I talked about doing this trig roughly at 1330 today. We made no definite plans as its hard to guarantee an exact time on a work day. Not wanting the Bear to miss out I shot him an email this morning which resulted in a quick 'why not'. Fortunately timing worked well and I picked up the Bear on my way. We parked and climbed to the trip and then my phone rang. SSR had just parked next to us. We waited for him then took the necessary photos and a few more for fun.
It was a perfect Autumn day and fantastic to be celebrating the anniversary of Australia's first cache with two great mates Very Happy TFTC

A Bear, a Goose and a Rat went for a lunchtime walk to grab this one on the anniversary day of the first Australian geocache. A lovely day will awesome views. TFTC.

30-Dec-15
A quick stroll up the hill from the car park on a lovely day.
We sometimes ride around the upper slopes of this on MTBs, and you can see where the track drops off the top for the seriously loonie.
Found the three support points and the central concrete pad, as well as the remains of the cairn in a nearby hollow.

22-Nov-15
Found this tp point - well a number of nails in concrete which I believe this tp is?

Also a small cairn of stones can be seen in the background as well as a large gnome which is hidden nearby

07-Aug-15
Out and about on a lovely afternoon for caching. Not much left here except a great view. The rock cairn has been pushed over the bank.

We first became aware of this Trig Point when Dippy started looking for it a couple of years ago and we were interested in what she discovered. Unfortunately circumstances meant that we were not able to assist in the hunt. Finally we went to look for the trig point for ourselves and a conundrum was posed for us. Our GPS indicated that GZ was about 5m away from the cairn of stones (recently constructed we believe), on a concrete pad a little below ground level but now exposed. Nearby to the pad are three other pads with V-shaped steel inserts, probably cut off angle iron. We came home intending to look at the detail on the SurCom database but for some reason, it was not accessible and only became available today. We are now convinced that the Survey Marker was at the concrete pad, not at the location marked by the cairn. The following reasons support our conclusion:
* SurCom shows that each of the six reference points were galvanised iron bolts embedded in concrete. The closest any of the reference markers were to GZ was 6.429m. The cairn is only about 1.5m from a reference marker making the cairn too close for the Survey Marker location. We didn't have a tape measure with us but our GPS indicated that the concrete pad was a little over 6m from the nearest reference marker.
* The reference markers are galvanised bolts, not angle iron. So the pads with the angle iron close to the concrete pad at GZ for us are not reference markers. They are most likely the cut-off supports for the beacon (which was removed on 30/10/2002). The arrangement of the three concrete pads with angle iron embedded forms a regular triangular base, consistent with a beacon.

The photo we have added to the Gallery shows two images: Mrs y'stassie at the concrete pad where our GPS units indicated that GZ should be located; and Mrs y'stassie standing at the cairn.

One of Dippy's photos shows that the cairn was not present when she started her investigations. It is total conjecture on our part, but we wonder if the cairn was built for a navigation exercise (orienteering, rogaining etc) conducted in the area in recent times

When we noticed this published it was assumed it would be on the top of Knocklofty, but a check on the map soon changed that assumption.
We went via Salvator Road, which was a new way for us and most interesting and returned via the Glover Track to Poets Road.

Nice work Dippy, I had no idea the trig was there until I saw the cairn, and now the cairn seems to change in every photo.

19-Mar-15
Drove to the car park and then had a short, gentle walk up the hill to this cache.
Sainted at 1130hrs.
Then looked for and found some of the original footings.
TFTC and cheers
OldSaint.

Found this in the afternoon after a short walk from below - found the stone cairn. Only found three of the concrete bases but assumed that there would be a fourth, so well done Dippy ! Clapping
Nice view from here, too ! Very Happy

I found this most interesting. I actually visited this location on several occasions in October 2013 as I was hoping to publish it at that time. Initially I found two of the reference points (little cement blocks - one with a bolt and one with perhaps the end of a star picket(?)embedded in it). On subsequent visits, with quite a bit of digging and scraping I also uncovered two more: one again had the metal "V" like a star picket embedded, and the other one a bolt. But I didn't find the STM marker, and there was definitely no cairn!

I will attach the photo from that time that shows the absence of the cairn - it has three of the reference marker points circled and the fourth is behind where I took the photo from. The cairn is (now) immediately to the left of where the furthest right reference marker is circled, and to the right of Maddie - on the top of what appears to be a little mound. It made me want to disassemble the cairn and dig right below...maybe someone else actually found the STM. Or maybe after I exposed the RMs more, someone decided to build the cairn....who knows? I also noticed one of Alby's photos is of where the marker used to be. I had also done the digging down to that exposing it as it now appears, as I'd hit on it with my probe, but in the end decided it was just a rock. Maybe I'm wrong though. I'd love if anyone else can provide more details.

I visited again today while I was up there jogging. The log sticking out of the top of the cairn from Alby's visit is no longer there, and the cairn seems to have grown from the wagtails visit.

I love Knocklofty, so thoroughly enjoyed re-visiting. Thanks for continuing the interest at this site, Alby Dangles.

PS. Can't seem to get the photos to not be sideways!

***FTF***
On holidays in Tas and as this one still remained 'unfound' this morning we thought we'd have a go for the FTF. We arrived too early (gate opens at 8am) so kept going along Forest Rd to find 'Stairs Go High (kind of)' cache first. (Which we did find. ) Then back we went arriving at 8:02am and the gate was open. Very Happy
Beautiful morning for this walk. We followed the power line clearing before veering off towards GZ.
At GZ there is a rock cairn, sawn off trig base and a flat trig point. Oh, and a nice view.

I was out mapping tracks on Knocklofty Park and was surprised to find a cairn of rocks with a log sticking out of it, and the cut off base of a trig point. Back home I confirmed it was a trig it is strange for me to stumble across a trig usually I go finding them.

First to find up for grabs
