Description

Bell Old TS?

Official name of this Trig Station as per NSW Department of Lands is: Bell Old.

Serial number is: TS number not allocated.

Last Inspected on: May 14, 1981.

Elevation is: 1093 metres.

On top of Watertrough Hill on the Bells Line of Road, the track is now only 4WD, but it is a short walk to the top.

It is well worth the effort as the view is truly amazing.

A trig point (also known as a Trigonometric Station) typically consists of a black disc on top of four metal legs or concrete pillar, resembling a navigation beacon. It is also accompanied by a metal disc, which is located directly below the center point of the tripod or on top of the pillar itself.

Trig points are generally located at the top of hills or points of prominence in the landscape. Many provide unique views and challenges, with some being difficult to get to.

These points were regarded as valuable to surveyors, providing reference points for measuring distance and direction, and assisting in the creation of maps.

To log a find on the Geocaching Australia website, you will need to include a picture of the trig point. You are encouraged to leave a description of your journey in your log to help others in finding the trig point.

The original collection of trig points has been sourced from Geoscience Australia and may contain inaccuracies.

Got the bike out today for the first day of spring and thought I would head up Bell's Line of Road and bag a few Trigs. It was a little cold still and there are still some areas around Blackheath and Mt Victoria that are closed due to the fires over the Christmas period but a great day all round. This was my last stop for the day and what an awesome lookout over the valley. A nice easy walk to the top for a 2x trig score. I definitely would not have wanted to be up here during the fires it is all pretty scorched but the trigs have faired well.

As we walked in we were advised by an RFS officer that they were to backburn the area in an hour, we traded UHF freqs and gave an assurance we'd be back in 20 minutes and shot off.... we found the nearby cache and the trigs and jogged back....

An early morning short caching trip to this part of the mountains – 4 for the $ of 1 visit – 2 off Australian caching trigs & 2 off waymarks at this GZ location. For me this is the sort of trigs that I like – a nice climb to a fantastic view and what a view it is. Thanks again Clan Griffin

Great trig in a fantastic location. Found with JJCC on a run up the mountains.

Interestingly the point photographed by previous finders is now painted bright yellow and has an unnumbered State Survey Marker in the hole. Four bolts in the rock a little bit further out than the trig (Bell) and the SSM appear to be the remains of the Bell Old trig.

Arrived at GZ from the road below and started my search for the 'Trig' Looked for a few minutes but was then rewarded with the prize.

Thanks to Roger3w for the work and the photo, without which I would I have struggled.

Many thanks to rogerw3 for doing the research necessary to discover the remains of this old trig, once located right next to the present Bell Trig.

We spent a bit of time here investigating the bits and pieces.

Great views!

Found today with pjmpjm, it helped that we both knew exactly where to find the trig and what we were looking for!
