Description

A Trig Point is a virtual cache which requires a cacher to locate the Trigonometric Station at GZ.

Trig points are generally located at the top of hills or points of prominence in the landscape. Many provide unique views and challenges, with some being difficult to get to.

These points were regarded as valuable to surveyors, providing reference points for measuring distance and direction, and assisting in the creation of maps.

There are, however, a number of trig points which are not beacons.

To log a find on the Geocaching Australia website, you will need to include a picture of the trig point, along with your GPS receiver and (preferably) yourself. Long distance / telephoto type pictures are against the spirit of this cache. You are encouraged to leave a description of your journey in your log to help others in finding the trig point.

The original collection of trig points has been sourced from Geoscience Australia and may contain inaccuracies.

Please respect local laws and regulations when searching for trig points. If you believe that a trig point is located on private property or in a dangerous location, you may archive the cache, by clicking on Log this Cache and place an "Archived" log on the Geocaching Australia website.

If you feel that you can add to the description of this trig point or adjust the difficulty / terrain ratings, please feel free to edit this cache and amend the information suitably. Vandalism of the cache description or other information will result in your account being terminated.

Additional Information

This trig point is actually a fire lookout POLE. Access off the Trail Harbour Road turn vicinity S41 53.051 E145 17.750 and follow the track up the hill to the top.

It was the first day of winter and despite weather forecasts of snow as low as 300m, we decided to head to the West Coast. All was going well until we reached Highclere when we started to see snow on the ground. The further south we went, the more heavy were the snow falls. However, when we got to the Fingerpost at the turnoff to Waratah, the Murchison Highway was closed. Rather than waste the trip, we went into Waratah where we were greeted with picture postcard scenes - snow blanketed the entire town and surrounding areas. Because of the state of the roads, the kids didn't go to school and they were having a great time sliding down steep slopes on inner tubes and sleds.

When we got back to the Fingerpost we were pleasantly surprised so see that the Murchison Highway was now open. Our mission was resumed. There had been quite heavy snow falls which had been cleared off the road although driving was still a challenge, especially when heavy snow showers occurred on occasions. However, eventually we were able to get to Zeehan and went to look for this cache.

The snowfall at Zeehan was not nearly as heavy as further north. We used Team Swampy's access off Trial harbour Road suggestion and our little low-clearance AWD Corolla wagon made it up the track and along the ridge without any difficulties. This is certainly a different style of trig point, one that we had never seen before. The photo adde to the Gallery is of Mrs y'stassie standing next to the Oonah Hill Fire Lookout Pole.

Checked this one out on our way back from Climies Track and the Pieman Heads track. It was late and starting to rain, but that did not deter Chris Mc and I from finding this trig.
*FTF* at around 8:30pm.
I wouldn't be climbing this pole and IF I did, I definitely wouldn't be putting my hand up - that's 11000 volts or more in the cable above!
