Description

A Trig Point is a virtual cache which requires a cacher to locate the Trigonometric Station at GZ.

A trig point (also known as a Trigonometric Station) typically consists of a black disc on top of four metal legs or concrete pillar, resembling a navigation beacon. It is also accompanied by a metal disc, which is located directly below the centre point of the tripod or on top of the pillar itself.

Trig points are generally located at the top of hills or points of prominence in the landscape. Many provide unique views and challenges, with some being difficult to get to.

These points were regarded as valuable to surveyors, providing reference points for measuring distance and direction, and assisting in the creation of maps.

To log a find on the Geocaching Australia website, you will need to include a picture of the trig point, along with your GPS receiver and (preferably) yourself. Long distance / telephoto type pictures are against the spirit of this cache. You are encouraged to leave a description of your journey in your log to help others in finding the trig point.

Please respect local laws and regulations when searching for trig points. If you believe that a trig point is located on private property or in a dangerous location, you may archive the cache, by clicking on Log this Cache and place an "Archived" log on the Geocaching Australia website.

If you feel that you can add to the description of this trig point or adjust the difficulty / terrain ratings, please feel free to edit this cache and amend the information suitably. Vandalism of the cache description or other information will result in your account being terminated.

Additional Information

Follow the road signs from Greens Beach to the West Head Lookout carpark. From there, walk to the lookout which gives excellent views of Bagders Beach and Badgers Head. Just before the lookout, a track heads in a northerly direction, eventually arriving at the northern most point of West Head. At a point along the track, a GPS will indicate that the Trig Point is about 90m to the west of the track. Low scrub needs to be negotiated before reaching GZ. The Trig Point is one of the quite old wooden pyramid style, similar to those found at Cockatoo Hill (TP5195) and on Mt Claude (TP6325). It appears that the quadpod has been the victim of a fallen tree but it has been reassembled at, or very close to, the original location. The coordinates posted are those listed in the SurCom data base and can be accessed through the link West Head.

While exploring the Beaconsfield-Greens beach area today. We grab several caches on our expedition. This was one of them. A quick find with accurate coordinates.
We found the wooden tower but the ground marker was shown to be under the fallen tree. Was rather warm under the trees near this one. TFTC

After grabbing the cache at the lookout Mr beetle waited while I continued on to look for this trig. After a bit of downhill and then uphill I left the track and headed bush towards GZ. Chose the worst possible way and had to do a fair bit of detouring around and under fallen trees. At GZ took a few photos with the tablet which is difficult, especially trying to get a selfie with the trig in the background. Found an easier way back to the track and sweated my way back to the van. Thanks.

If I hadn't read about this structure being an official trig point I would never have believed it had I stumbled on it whilst walking in the area! Some great nearby spots for photos along the beach and along the coast.

Followed the instructions from 2y'stassies to locate this unusual trig except we kept to the path and only had to bush bash the last 30 metres. The wind was blowing over the top and the waves on Badger Beach were rolling in. Thanks for showing us this spot as have not been in here before. The views along the walk were amazing. TFTT

Today was the second attempt we have made to locate this Trig Point. The SurCom database gives very little detail meaning that we had no real idea what we were looking for (vane type, brass disc on the ground, stainless steel pin etc). However, the wooden Trig Point quadpod was instantly recognised once we got to GZ. We are not sure what we didn't find it previously but it is possible that the track starting near the lookout is more distinct now. The current location of the Trig Point marker is S41 04.056 E146 42.592. This was one of our more satisfying Trig Point hunts. The required photo has been added to the Gallery.
