Description

A Trig Point is a virtual cache which requires a cacher to locate the Trigonometric Station at GZ.

A trig point (also known as a Trigonometric Station) typically consists of a black disc on top of four metal legs or concrete pillar, resembling a navigation beacon. It is also accompanied by a metal disc, which is located directly below the center point of the tripod or on top of the pillar itself. Finis TP is a stone cairn approximately 1.5m high with a wooden mast. The vanes are no longer attached to the mast and are scattered on teh ground nearby.

Trig points are generally located at the top of hills or points of prominence in the landscape. Many provide unique views and challenges, with some being difficult to get to.

These points were regarded as valuable to surveyors, providing reference points for measuring distance and direction, and assisting in the creation of maps.

To log a find on the Geocaching Australia website, you will need to include a picture of the trig point, along with your GPS receiver and (preferably) yourself. Long distance / telephoto type pictures are against the spirit of this cache. You are encouraged to leave a description of your journey in your log to help others in finding the trig point.

Please respect local laws and regulations when searching for trig points. If you believe that a trig point is located on private property or in a dangerous location, you may archive the cache, by clicking on Log this Cache and place an "Archived" log on the Geocaching Australia website.

If you feel that you can add to the description of this trig point or adjust the difficulty / terrain ratings, please feel free to edit this cache and amend the information suitably. Vandalism of the cache description or other information will result in your account being terminated.

A small party of 17 managed to negotiate our way to Finis Trig as part of a bushwalking club outing. The starting point was a locked gate on Kyola Road, then Kesbys Point Road and across Mangrove Creek. Like Shankspony we picked up the old firetrail and followed it at times then cut across the final saddle to Finis Trig and a well deserved lunch with great views. After lunch we backtracked a little, before following the ridge line and a steep descent back to a different section of Mangrove Creek aiming for the firetrail on the other side of Stockyard Gully. From there we did a circuit back to the cars via Swintons Cave. An amazing day out and well worth the effort.

What better way to start Spring? Approached from Kesbys Point Road and across Mangrove Creek and up other side. Tried to follow the firetrail that's marked on some maps that goes directly across the ridge to Finis, but it's so overgrown, that in places it's easier to go around it than fight through all the new bush. Guessing the actual ridgeline may have been easier than this supposed path. Returned back along path (clearly didn't learn to avoid it by experience on way out), up to Great Northern Road, around by Blue Door Point road and down trail by Magrove Creek again and up again to the tend of Kesbys. A great day out Very Happy

I walked in from the Great North Road, with a bit of a navigational error. For future finders, the route along the ridges is pretty good, but don't get confused about which ridge you should be following.

I found a classic old cairn with mast, and the vanes scattered around. There are 360° views from the trig. Sweet.

Found at 11:08 am.
