Description

A Trig Point is a virtual cache which requires a cacher to locate the Trigonometric Station and photograph the GZ.

Official Code: TS5858
Official Name: Auckland

A trig point (also known as a Trigonometric Station) typically consists of a black disc on top of four metal legs or concrete pillar, resembling a navigation beacon. It is also accompanied by a metal disc, which is located directly below the center point of the tripod or on top of the pillar itself.

Trig points are generally located at the top of hills or points of prominence in the landscape. Many provide unique views and challenges, with some being difficult to get to.

These points were regarded as valuable to surveyors, providing reference points for measuring distance and direction, and assisting in the creation of maps.

To log a find on the Geocaching Australia website, you will need to include a picture of the trig point, along with your GPS receiver and (preferably) yourself. Long distance / telephoto type pictures are against the spirit of this cache. You are encouraged to leave a description of your journey in your log to help others in finding the trig point.

The original collection of trig points has been sourced from Geoscience Australia and may contain inaccuracies.

Please respect local laws and regulations when searching for trig points. If you believe that a trig point is located on private property or in a dangerous location, you may archive the cache, by clicking on Log this Cache and place an "Archived" log on the Geocaching Australia website.

If you feel that you can add to the description of this trig point or adjust the difficulty / terrain ratings, please feel free to edit this cache and amend the information suitably. Vandalism of the cache description or other information will result in your account being terminated.

This is really a 1.5/1.5 D/T trig. Very easy to get to and not to hard to spot.

Drove all the way down to the far south for the park run in Merimbula. Left straight after work Friday and arrived late last night. This morning up early to do some caches before running and then a massive day of caching after that, doing a big loop in the area and ending up in Merimbula again. Good caches everywhere, thanks to the CO for placing them.

Found this one while travelling to my sons wedding in Newcastle.

Parked right on top of this one.

A burnt out car warped in police tape near by.

This was easier than I expected. Good dirt road and I parked about 100 metres from the trig. Where I parked, a pink cloth is tired to a tree; perhaps showing where to park to access the trig(?). The 100 metre walk is easy and almost flat. When I got to the trig, a car was parked about 30 metres from it Shocked. Must be another road in. TFTC.

As we were in the area, we decided to look for this trig point. After driving up a rough road, we got within about 120m. From there it was "shanks pony" to GZ. The walk was made easier by a 4WD which had been through recently and created a clear track. When we arrived there were two posts, painted red on top. Although we could not find a survey marker button, our GPS indicated the the trig point location was the mid point between the two poles. Two photos have been added to the Gallery: the trig point posts as we approached; and our GPS at GZ, half way between the two poles. Thanks for the cache.

SE Coast and mountains drive trip. November 2015. There was a track some of the way, but the side track to the trig is long blocked by a fallen tree, but it was not far to walk.

Thanks
