Description

A Trig Point is a virtual cache which requires a cacher to locate the Trigonometric Station at GZ.

A trig point (also known as a Trigonometric Station) typically consists of a black disc on top of four metal legs or concrete pillar, resembling a navigation beacon. It is also accompanied by a metal disc, which is located directly below the center point of the tripod or on top of the pillar itself.

Trig points are generally located at the top of hills or points of prominence in the landscape. Many provide unique views and challenges, with some being difficult to get to.

These points were regarded as valuable to surveyors, providing reference points for measuring distance and direction, and assisting in the creation of maps.

To log a find on the Geocaching Australia website, you will need to include a picture of the trig point, along with your GPS receiver and (preferably) yourself. Long distance / telephoto type pictures are against the spirit of this cache. You are encouraged to leave a description of your journey in your log to help others in finding the trig point.

Please respect local laws and regulations when searching for trig points. If you believe that a trig point is located on private property or in a dangerous location, you may archive the cache, by clicking on Log this Cache and place an "Archived" log on the Geocaching Australia website.

If you feel that you can add to the description of this trig point or adjust the difficulty / terrain ratings, please feel free to edit this cache and amend the information suitably. Vandalism of the cache description or other information will result in your account being terminated.

Additonal Information

This is a 3km walk up hill along a gravel access road to the towers on top of the range. The last 100m is an easy walk accross the button grass.

Two of the towers are trig points, the coords are for the brass disc fixed to a large rock.

For any one that can walk 3km up a steady climb.

This was a tough walk up on a hot day, slowly we climbed higher and higher with Dino and Wilma reaching the top and enjoying the views in all directions. Not an awesome hike along the service road but there are not many hiking possibilities around and this certainly rewarda you with great views.
While Dino and Wilma went to thr very end of the track I went to look for the TP and found it no problem.

I thought this on might stay unfound for a little longer than this congratulations Oldsaint. Very Happy

I had been up here 33 years ago while doing some renovations on the Strathgordon chalet kitchen and remember the great views.

Recently I parked the car at the gate on Jacks Track ( S42 47.552 E146 03.847 ) I wish had the key. The road had just been graded and rolled so was in perfect condition except for the odd pits of rubbish in it. Half way up I found a lovely little rock pool on a ledge that was a perfect place to quench my thirst.

It didn't take too long to spot the rock that the trig was on as surveyors had painted the side of it red.

I made the mistake of heading south from the trig along the button grass with the intentions of meeting up with the road, I didn't take into account as I went up the road went down, by the time I started to go down the road seamed to be going down faster and further away so a change of direction was needed.

The rook pool was very welcome on the way back.

How Many times have I driven past this location and thought I'd like to go up there one day; plenty of sight seeing trips, fishing and hiking trips - been a real bucket list job for me.
Today I fulfilled that dream and took it out of the bucket.
After finding TP3169 "Serpentine Trig"; this walk seemed a bit daunting but took off and had my legs tell me they did not like me much about half way.
The hill seemed to rise forever, but only until you get to the top.
Walking over the button grass seemed a relief after the gravel track. Talking about the track, I was mesmerized by what it "contained:" rubber gloves, car parts, pvc piping, clothing, stuff that looked like whipper snipper cord, bottle tops etc. Amazing!
Arrived at GZ and quickly located the cache; Sainting it at 1400hrs.
There was no low flying cloud here and weren't the views fantastic!
Now to get my legs to carry back to the car. As on the way up, the views of the lake kept my mind off the heaviness of the legs.
Thanks for helping me fulfil a long time dream, a great walk and oh boy THE VIEWS! Not to mention an *FTF*
Cheers and thanks
OldSaint
