Description

Mt Jagungal Trig Point

Trig Point is a virtual cache which requires a cacher to locate the Trigonometric Station at GZ.

A trig point (also known as a Trigonometric Station) typically consists of a black disc on top of four metal legs or concrete pillar, resembling a navigation beacon. It is also accompanied by a metal disc, which is located directly below the center point of the tripod or on top of the pillar itself.

Trig points are generally located at the top of hills or points of prominence in the landscape. Many provide unique views and challenges, with some being difficult to get to.

These points were regarded as valuable to surveyors, providing reference points for measuring distance and direction, and assisting in the creation of maps.

To log a find on the Geocaching Australia website, you will need to include a picture of the trig point, along with your GPS receiver and (preferably) yourself. Long distance / telephoto type pictures are against the spirit of this cache. You are encouraged to leave a description of your journey in your log to help others in finding the trig point.

The original collection of trig points has been sourced from Geoscience Australia and may contain inaccuracies.

Please respect local laws and regulations when searching for trig points. If you believe that a trig point is located on private property or in a dangerous location, you may archive the cache, by clicking on Log this Cache and place an "Archived" log on the Geocaching Australia website.

If you feel that you can add to the description of this trig point or adjust the difficulty / terrain ratings, please feel free to edit this cache and amend the information suitably. Vandalism of the cache description or other information will result in your account being terminated.

I walked up here on my AAWT walk - much easier to come via the trail rather than bushbashing from near the weather station!

Once again visited this majestic Aussie peak as part of an over night trip.

Visited Mt Jagungal as part of an 8 day trip from Kiandra to Thredbo largely following the AAWT. We'd camped the night at O'Keefe's Hut and approached the summit via Jagungal Saddle. Lovely views from the top. Didn't realise there was a pad that could be followed back towards Tumut River so took an off-track option to rejoin the AAWT. Great morning of exploring!

The trig at the top is not the most inspiring - much prefer the one on the ground below the summit.

Ribbit Reached this trig on a three day trip to Jagungal for new years. A wonderful walk and nice to make a find out here. TFTT Ribbit

On a 3 day trip from Round Mountain, we camped near the base of Jagungal and climbed up here. It was so foggy when we reached the trig that the views were totally hidden. But luckily we'd had plenty of visibility on the way up Very Happy

I had camped the night before at Mawsons Hut with a view of Mt Jagungal in the distance. A fantastic day's walking along Kerries Ridge then through a variety of valleys crossing the Geehi River a number of times before beginning the ascent south-east of the mountain on a spur between the Strombo Range and the Toolong Range.

I thought I would be the first to log this trig but Jonnosan beat me to it by a day!

The views from the summit are amazing.

We descended to the north via a creek valley to emerge on the fire trail next to the met station - an "interesting" walk through some heavy scrub and one or two areas of mild exposure.

Found at 1:03 PM.

my original plan after descending round mountain in the early afternoon was to find a nice spot to camp before ascending jagungal for new years eve. but somehow I found myself at the Tumut River crossing before 6 and with plenty of daylight remaining figured i may as well keep going. I followed a well defined footpad upstream from the road all the way up to the summit. There was a flattish grassy spot just big enough for my tent about 20m from the summit marker. the views were amazing as late afternoon sun faded into dusk then bright stars in a pitch black sky. what a lovely spot.

in the morning i had a quick breakfast at the summit then bush bashed down hill to the road. i brewed a coffee at o'keefes hut before the big road bash along farm ridge road. when i got to the river i was too knackered to take of my shoes or find a spot to rock hop across so has wet feet for the final slog back to the car.

All in all a fun adventure and great way to roll over my 500th GCA
