Description

The official name of this trig station is TS423SMA 0691 (as listed on sixmaps). It is located near the Rolling Grounds and consists of a single wooden mast, now broken.

A Trig Point is a virtual cache which requires a cacher to locate the Trigonometric Station at GZ.

A trig point (also known as a Trigonometric Station) typically consists of a black disc on top of four metal legs or concrete pillar, resembling a navigation beacon. It is also accompanied by a metal disc, which is located directly below the center point of the tripod or on top of the pillar itself.

Trig points are generally located at the top of hills or points of prominence in the landscape. Many provide unique views and challenges, with some being difficult to get to.

These points were regarded as valuable to surveyors, providing reference points for measuring distance and direction, and assisting in the creation of maps.

To log a find on the Geocaching Australia website, you will need to include a picture of the trig point, along with your GPS receiver and (preferably) yourself. Long distance / telephoto type pictures are against the spirit of this cache. You are encouraged to leave a description of your journey in your log to help others in finding the trig point.

Please respect local laws and regulations when searching for trig points. If you believe that a trig point is located on private property or in a dangerous location, you may archive the cache, by clicking on Log this Cache and place an "Archived" log on the Geocaching Australia website.

If you feel that you can add to the description of this trig point or adjust the difficulty / terrain ratings, please feel free to edit this cache and amend the information suitably. Vandalism of the cache description or other information will result in your account being terminated.

I am running a training program down in the mountains this week for some of my trainees in Outdoor Leadership. of course it gave me a fantastic excuse for them to navigate to some trigs for me. We had a fantastic day snowshoeing from Horse Camp Hut to White's River Hut via the Rolling Grounds and the Granite Peaks. There wasnt a lot of snow around for this time of year unfortunately but it made the disappointment of not being on skis a little easier. fantastic weather today I got all they way down to a cotton long sleeve shirt. As others have mentioned this trig has hard a hard life but i managed to find both the wooden post still sticking out of the rocks and the remnants of the vanes jammed under a couple of tyres. the tyres and chicken mesh seemed very out of place, the only explanation we could think of was from an old fence line from the pastoral days up here.

I think I am logging this trig in the right place. The map only shows the trig as SMA 0691 and the remnants of what we 'found' are very different to what Tyreless discovered. Not sure where the tyres came from but there were definitely parts of the vanes evident. Found on day 6 of an 8 day walk from Kiandra to Thredbo largely following the AAWT. Loved the area around The Rolling Ground and we were lucky with the weather (thunderstorm was the day before for us).

Revisited the trig today. The views are great and walking is lovely on the Main Range. The trig marker, whch on closer nspection is a wooden post, has snapped with the base still lodged in the rock and the remainder nearby. I climbed from from the south and the hill was covered in chicken wire, which seemed a bit odd.

Our party of walkers was heading for the Main Range after 5 days of glorious weather as we rambled around the Jagungal Wilderness. Today, however, the weather was foul. Visibility of less than 100m made navigating by map and compass impossible. We'd walked up from Schlink Pass trying as best we could to keep below the ridge but the wind was whipping around us and the sleet was stinging our faces. We decided to take a break in a bit of shelter behind some rocks. I looked up and saw a post on top of the rocks and was pleased to find that, by pure luck, we were sheltering at a trig station I had made a note of previously.

The weather prevented me spending any time there so the photos are taken around 20m from the marker.

I would imagine the views here are fantastic but I could barely see the trig post through the mist.

Found at 10:19 AM.
