Description

A Trig Point is a virtual cache which requires a cacher to locate the Trigonometric Station at GZ.

A trig point (also known as a Trigonometric Station) typically consists of a black disc on top of four metal legs or concrete pillar, resembling a navigation beacon. It is also accompanied by a metal disc, which is located directly below the center point of the tripod or on top of the pillar itself.

Trig points are generally located at the top of hills or points of prominence in the landscape. Many provide unique views and challenges, with some being difficult to get to.

These points were regarded as valuable to surveyors, providing reference points for measuring distance and direction, and assisting in the creation of maps.

To log a find on the Geocaching Australia website, you will need to include a picture of the trig point, along with your GPS receiver and (preferably) yourself. Long distance / telephoto type pictures are against the spirit of this cache. You are encouraged to leave a description of your journey in your log to help others in finding the trig point.

Please respect local laws and regulations when searching for trig points. If you believe that a trig point is located on private property or in a dangerous location, you may archive the cache, by clicking on Log this Cache and place an "Archived" log on the Geocaching Australia website.
If you feel that you can add to the description of this trig point or adjust the difficulty / terrain ratings, please feel free to edit this cache and amend the information suitably. Vandalism of the cache description or other information will result in your account being terminated.

Description: Brass pin marked 'AC' cemented in dolerite rock. A concrete platform with three drill holes to accomodate instrument surrounds the mark.
Access Details: There are 4 places you can park your vehicle. Accompanying instructions follow.
1. End of Hall St, Ridgeway. Take marked walking track until you reach power lines on wooden poles (not the metal towers!), turn right and follow the power lines up the bitumen road.
2. Park at the bottom of the road up to the tower. Walk up the bitumen road.
3. Park at S42 55.006 E147 17.084 near walking track. Walk up the hill following the track to the right with the Telecom cable markers (not under the power line towers).
4. Park at the picnic area near the junction of Chimney Pot Hill Rd and the Huon Hwy. Walk up through the quarry following the wooden power poles until you find a walking track off to the left. This should be near a Telstra cable pit, and should come out on the last corner of the bitumen road to the tower.

Once you arrive at the tower, walk along the fence to the northern side of the installation and the trig will be visible. See pictures.

Lovely spot as always.

Out and about today with RLD4963 and the GeoGSP. After a week in Canberra where there where hundreds of caches to be found in every direction, we returned to Hobart and found we had a much more limited choice of areas to cache. Luckily, there was a nice series of caches on Chimney Pot Hill so we headed there. We couldn't miss out on getting this trig while we were in the area so we made the trek to the top of the hill and took the required photo. Great views today.

This was our final cache at the end of a rather warm to hot walk up Chimney Pot Hill. Two photos have been added to the Gallery: the trig point marker in a hole in the centre of a cement slab; and a bolt fixed into a nearby rock, possibly a reference marker. Thanks for the cache. Now time to head back down the hill to the car and off to Kaoota.

Found while hiding caches in the area

Saw a four foot tiger snake slide across path about 50 metres from the trig.

a tidy up day that needed to go for a week, getting the odd cache here or there in this area. a nice walk along a country road and then took a track that may join up to the next road that I wanted to go to, luckily it did. walking along the fence line I had company with technician's working on one of the antennas on the tower. found the slab of concrete in question and the bolt glued to the rock, took plenty of pictures, a huge tower from where I stand.

While Mr W wandered around doing the Chimney Pot PCC I headed up to take the required photo of the trig. The ground was rather wet underfoot after last night's rain. A great view from GZ.

A nice easy find.
I took the long way up and the direct way back down.

Had been to the top of this hill before, so took a different track up and walked back down the original track taken on my first trip; making a circuit of the walk.
Found and Sainted the trig at 1307hrs after visiting Mum in the Hobart Private.
Enjoyed the walk

Decided to do some more caching today and since ST5 Bonnet Hill is referenced to this trig, I thought I'd see if I could find it.
I parked at Ridgeway and walked up the track then the road to the tower. I was happy to see that the trig is outside the fence.
Always love the views from up here, but the wind can be cold. It was howling through the tower today.
