"Mungaroo Hill
Nomenclature
An aboriginal name; meaning unknown.
General Notes
Five kilometres south-east of Wirraminna railway station on the east-west railway.

In 1960 Mr Barron's brass name plate, formerly attached to his saddlebag, was found by Mr W.A. Wilson of Lake Callabonna Station; it was apparently lost by its owner in 1879 while surveying the SA/Queensland border. A photograph is held in the Department of Lands of the relic and a note says: "He died at the age of 31, due to ill health ensuing from hardships suffered whilst surveying in remote areas." A photostat copy of the plate and caption is in the Mortlock Library - refer PRG 412.

A plaque erected on the hill in May 1990 reads: This plaque commemorates the erection of this stone cairn by Surveyor Barron in 1878 for the trigonometrical survey of land adjacent to Lake Gairdner, and pays tribute to those surveyors who endured the hardships of exploration in the remote areas of our State... Found on our winter road trip around to NT and across the desert to Queensland, we made it from Sydney to here in 2 days ! safe to say we are a little tired and ready to take things a bit slower. Love being out here. We got to this one right on dark pulled over and picked out the trig with the cars headlights, quick snap and we were on our way to Glendambo for some well earned rest!

I saw the stone base and pole on top of the rise as we headed north on the Stuart Highway this morning.

"That'll be a cache." I said as I flipped on the left indicstor, checked behind, and chose the spot to pull over a few hundred metres north. Out with the phone, refreshed the app, an sure enough, it was!

A short walk back to get the photo, waving to passing motorists on the way.

Alice trip 2017. Day 7. Today we drove from Whyalla to Glendambo via Roxby Downs. A first for me. Along the way we managed a few trigs.

Thanks

#GA1462 - 17:35; Day 9 of the Alice Mega Road Trip with Sol de lune and albida33. After a day of caching in and around Whyalla, it was time to head further north for our next stop at Glendambo with a detour into Woomera, Roxby Downs and Olympic Dam. We were closing on Glendambo when we stopped off to grab a snap of this old historic trig. The plaque in front of the trig provides details of its history.
