Description

Blackbutt TS955

Official name of this Trig Station as per NSW Department of Lands is: Blackbutt.

Serial number is: TS955.

Last Inspected on: No Data.

Trig is a perfectly preserved cairn with mast and vanes.

A trig point (also known as a Trigonometric Station) typically consists of a black disc on top of four metal legs or concrete pillar, resembling a navigation beacon. It is also accompanied by a metal disc, which is located directly below the center point of the tripod or on top of the pillar itself.

Trig points are generally located at the top of hills or points of prominence in the landscape. Many provide unique views and challenges, with some being difficult to get to.

These points were regarded as valuable to surveyors, providing reference points for measuring distance and direction, and assisting in the creation of maps.

To log a find on the Geocaching Australia website, you will need to include a picture of the trig point. You are encouraged to leave a description of your journey in your log to help others in finding the trig point.

The original collection of trig points has been sourced from Geoscience Australia and may contain inaccuracies.

I chose this trig for my 2000th find...and I picked a good one for it. I had no idea that it hadn't been visited for 7 years and that WM and RW3 were the only ones to do so. If I had known this, I may have been daunted by it and chosen another. I bypassed the closed road and went UP! Followed it along until I passed it up high to the left. I parked at the first safe spot away from the track and this left me with a 300+ metre walk up. It wasn't steep, nor was it anything that would be considered a bush bash. It was a most enjoyable in the end. Perfect trig for a milestone find.

On a Sunny/Dark Corner/Winburndale reserve trig seek with rogerw3* ...

A drive on Blackbutt Mtns Fire Trail with a park at the 'Dead End Road' sign for a enjoyable early morn walk uphill to the end of the dead end - and where it was discovered the next day the FT continued around to this point. A futher walk took us to point where it was into the lightly timbered bushland for a 60m relatively easy clamber on the hillside.

There in near as built pristine condition was Blackbutt, complete with vanes, wooden trig marked mast and a near perfect circular rock built cairn ... one vane reverse engraved with name. Set in thin gum forest it is easy to envisage the almost 360° view this mountain top originally had, with an extraordinary vista across the ways.

*Blackbutt was rogerw3's 800th trig find - it was mutually agreed this was indeed a fine sentinel for a milestone number.

Out on a mission with whitemushroom to get Trig number 800 and this was it. A short walk uphill and there it was a perfectly formed cairn complete with mast and vanes.
The name for some reason is printed as a mirror image on the vane, the mast has a carved broad arrow indicating a trig.
The view must have been amazing from there when the trees had been cleared, but alas not so much today but the Trig was well worth the effort.
