Description

CORS (Continually Operating Reference Stations) collecting geodetic data from GNSS.

A CORS is a Continuously Operating Reference Station. CORS can take the place of a traditional base station used in differential GNSS positing. They can give an instant position to an accuracy of ±20 mm and are used in many industries including Precision Agriculture, Construction, Mining, Surveying and in Scientific Research.

Typically, the maximum distance between a base station and rover GNSS set up is around 10 - 15 km. This is due to the effect of the atmosphere on the GNSS signals as they travel from the satellite to a GNSS receiver.

With the establishment of a network of CORS, the distance between the base and the rover can be extended. The CORS can be spaced around 70 km apart and using at least 3 of these CORS, the atmospheric effects can be modelled and corrected for, yielding the ±20 mm position solution required by so many industries.

More info on CORS can be found here: CORS

#GA2879 - 16:15; Arrived in Tasmania last Saturday and after a few days in Hobart we were now spending some time in Launceston. After catching up with some friends, I had a bit of time for some caching. I have been to this area caching a few times before, so made a quick park and snap out of this one. Our accommodation was at the bottom end of the park so it was just a matter of slogging it up the hill. Spotted the semaphore tower and then headed over to the aquatic centre. Had to step back far enough to be able to see the CORS, but it's visible.

Have been sorting through various dz trophy points requirements to reveal a cache  needed to be found starting with the letter 'V' to complete a particular trophy, plus nab a few other GA caches if available. The only two caches I could find starting with 'V' were 'Victoria Peak' and 'Victor the Vet Gnome'. The first required a very arduous trek on the West Coast...so soon ruled that one out, especially at this time of the year....the latter was a moveable in the Trevallyn State Reserve so was way easier to access..the only problem being in whether it had been found and not yet logged as is often the case with moveables..ah well, would soon find out.Having to once again attend an appointment to see a Specialist today (Friday), a plan was soon hatched. The weather forecast was not too bad in Launnie, being mostly fine and showers or rain developing later in the day. Set off around 9am in overcast conditions but cleared a little on arriving at the Dr's surgery. All went as well as expected there, then off to find the elusive moveable cache. Set the coords on the trusty Garmin Navigator as I find it much easier to navigate the jumble of streets around Trevallyn and Launceston in general. It was not long before gz was reached with not a muggles in sight. Clue said it was hidden at the base of a tree...yes but which one. After a few false starts the right tree was soon indeed found and Victor the Vet Gnome was finally in my grasp....now off to find the trig 'Launceston CORS'.Arrived in the vicinity of gz but was unable to see it at first so had to do another lap. Parked on High Street then walked closer to where I could finally see it and take the required photo. Tftc GCA....cheers ST.
