Description

Trig just 80m off the Lake McKenzie Road.

A Trig Point is a virtual cache which requires a cacher to locate the Trigonometric Station at GZ.

A trig point (also known as a Trigonometric Station) typically consists of a black disc on top of four metal legs or concrete pillar, resembling a navigation beacon. It is also accompanied by a metal disc, which is located directly below the center point of the tripod or on top of the pillar itself.

Trig points are generally located at the top of hills or points of prominence in the landscape. Many provide unique views and challenges, with some being difficult to get to.

These points were regarded as valuable to surveyors, providing reference points for measuring distance and direction, and assisting in the creation of maps.

To log a find on the Geocaching Australia website, you will need to include a picture of the trig point, along with your GPS receiver and (preferably) yourself. Long distance / telephoto type pictures are against the spirit of this cache. You are encouraged to leave a description of your journey in your log to help others in finding the trig point.

The original collection of trig points has been sourced from Geoscience Australia and may contain inaccuracies.

Please respect local laws and regulations when searching for trig points. If you believe that a trig point is located on private property or in a dangerous location, you may archive the cache, by clicking on Log this Cache and place an "Archived" log on the Geocaching Australia website.

If you feel that you can add to the description of this trig point or adjust the difficulty / terrain ratings, please feel free to edit this cache and amend the information suitably. Vandalism of the cache description or other information will result in your account being terminated.

The trig is a brass mushroom set in concrete. The original beacon lays in pieces surrounding the ground mark. Access is just a short distance west of the Devils Gullet turnoff.

Found the trig today after completing the Geoart series along the road into Lake McKenzie. Quick scamper up to the trig point. Easily spotted by the rock cairns marking the area.

Today Trimbletas and I had a action packed day of caching planned. We started by doing some caches around Ulverstone then we moved onto Sheffield then it was off to climb the gog range to get the cache at the top and attempt to drive to granta pools which we did successfully. The two walkers that were at the pools were rather surprised when the bullbar of the ute came round the corner. After having a chinwag with them and grabbing photos, We then headed for lake McKenzie road so trimbletas could find the sail boat series. Did a maintenance check of all caches as he found them. Once completed we climbed up to lake McKenzie where we stopped to hide some moveables and locate the trig just off the road. Searched for a couple of othe caches one the way back home. Overall a great day out was had. TFTC

We were in the area today doing the GeoArt trail so stopped to grab this cache too.
Didn't take a direct route to GZ but followed the path of least resistance.
Quite sheltered on the walk up but the wind was cold and strong at GZ.
Thanks.

Up in the area on quite a wintry feeling day. Traipsed up to the trig, well trig remains is more accurate I suppose.

We have had this trip point on our radar for some time but left making a visit until a day where we needed a Dragon Zone cache for the Molten Soltice Horologist challenge. After the snow coveted roads of the weekend, we were not sure what access was like to the Lake Mackenzie Road but there were no difficulties apart from some wet patches on sections of the gravel road. Accurate coordinates led to a quick find of the survey marker button and we also found some of the remains of the survey beacon vane. Five photos have been added to the Gallery: two photos of the survey marker; one with Mrs y'stassie standing next to the survey marker; and two photos of different remains of the survey beacon vane. Thanks Geocaching Australia for the cache (and to SiriusTas for locating the trip point).

Quite an easy trig to get to. The new geohound loves getting out and about too. My old warhorse 4paws(aka sirius) is past any trekking now, so is back home in the warm comfort of his bed which is permanently placed in front of the wood heater....after all he has reached 100....but still very well other than a crook hip.
Views from here look out across to Lake Parangana and surrounds.

After many hours of map perusal, a field trip to verify the trigs existence and cache listing a FTF has been claimed....cheers.
