Description
Not for the Faint hearted
A Trig Point is a virtual cache which requires a cacher to locate the Trigonometric Station at GZ.
A trig point (also known as a Trigonometric Station) typically consists of a black disc on top of four metal legs or concrete pillar, resembling a navigation beacon. It is also accompanied by a metal disc, which is located directly below the center point of the tripod or on top of the pillar itself.
Trig points are generally located at the top of hills or points of prominence in the landscape. Many provide unique views and challenges, with some being difficult to get to.
These points were regarded as valuable to surveyors, providing reference points for measuring distance and direction, and assisting in the creation of maps.
To log a find on the Geocaching Australia website, you will need to include a picture of the trig point, along with your GPS receiver and (preferably) yourself. Long distance / telephoto type pictures are against the spirit of this cache. You are encouraged to leave a description of your journey in your log to help others in finding the trig point.
Please respect local laws and regulations when searching for trig points. If you believe that a trig point is located on private property or in a dangerous location, you may archive the cache, by clicking on Log this Cache and place an "Archived" log on the Geocaching Australia website.
If you feel that you can add to the description of this trig point or adjust the difficulty / terrain ratings, please feel free to edit this cache and amend the information suitably. Vandalism of the cache description or other information will result in your account being terminated.
Additonal Information
Source: A short walk but VERY hard going.
Logs
I asked Swampy and GrahmeK if they wanted to come along, GrahameK was keen but at the last minute Swampy pulled out (lucky for him).
We left Glenorchy at 6:00 and arrived at our designated parking spot near a large cutting at 8:10.
After getting ready and working out which way to tackle the cutting we headed off at 8:17.
The first part of the walk up hill was through shin high button grass which was repetitively easy going and we managed a peak speed of 3km/h, at the top of the ridge we thought we would be back by lunch as were quarter of the way there and it had only taken 45min.
As we headed off along the ridge we studied our plotted route on the GPS and the bush we were about to head into for a path of least resistance, most of the time we managed to stay in amongst the button grass and the shorter tea tree. But when we got it wrong and found our selves in amongst the head high bush we were lucky to make any progress, taking a minute to take one step. It was good to find some rocks as they were so much easier to walk on it wane of these rocky outcrops we stopped at and had morning tea and enjoyed the view unfortunately it was a little cold in the wind.
We eventually arrive at the trig at 11:40 and had lunch and thought about how long it had taken us to walk such a short distance.
The walk out look longer as we were tied, sore and navigation seamed more difficult as we didn't have any reference point to walk towards, our progress slowed even more when GrahameK pulled a muscle in his leg making it very painful for him to lift his leg.
Back at the car at 16:00, then a quick drive by trig before a coffee / beer at the Lake Pedder chalet.
Got back home at 18:30.
NOT for the faint hearted.
