A Trig Point is a virtual cache which requires a cacher to locate the Trigonometric Station at GZ.
A trig point (also known as a Trigonometric Station) typically consists of a black disc on top of four metal legs or concrete pillar, resembling a navigation beacon. It is also accompanied by a metal disc, which is located directly below the center point of the tripod or on top of the pillar itself.
Trig points are generally located at the top of hills or points of prominence in the landscape. Many provide unique views and challenges, with some being difficult to get to.
These points were regarded as valuable to surveyors, providing reference points for measuring distance and direction, and assisting in the creation of maps.
To log a find on the Geocaching Australia website, you will need to include a picture of the trig point, along with your GPS receiver and (preferably) yourself. Long distance / telephoto type pictures are against the spirit of this cache. You are encouraged to leave a description of your journey in your log to help others in finding the trig point.
The original collection of trig points has been sourced from Geoscience Australia and may contain inaccuracies.
Please respect local laws and regulations when searching for trig points. If you believe that a trig point is located on private property or in a dangerous location, you may archive the cache, by clicking on Log this Cache and place an "Archived" log on the Geocaching Australia website.
If you feel that you can add to the description of this trig point or adjust the difficulty / terrain ratings, please feel free to edit this cache and amend the information suitably. Vandalism of the cache description or other information will result in your account being terminated.
CACHE ACCESS
Turn west off Lemonthyme main road at S41 34.599 E146 09.799
Proceed along the gravel spur road, then at the 1st right angle bend, proceed west along a 4wd track which will be quite boggy in winter. Travel along the 4wd track until a pink taped track enters the bush on the northern side of track, which is approx. 350m from the trig.
Logs
So we headed off but with the amount of recent rain, we were not game to drive on the 4WD track (some of the pools looked like swimming pools) and we left our car about 1200m from GZ. Apart from the large pools of water and a number of trees that had fallen across the road, it was easy going along the 4WD road until we got to about 330m from GZ where we found the familiar pink tape placed by Sirius. Then it was through the ferns, scrub and trees following the trail of pink tape. Some trees which had fallen on the lines between the pink tape necessitating small detours. We slowly made our way towards GZ and after about 20 minutes we arrived at the trig point. Two photos have been added to the Gallery: Mrs y's Tassie at the triangular trig point marker; and a trig point identification plate attached to a dropper. Before leaving we took a look to the west - Lake Cethana and Lorinna were very far below explaining why the vantage point of Gadds Hill had been chosen to locate the trig point. Then we retraced our steps back to the 4WD track and then to our car. In all, it took up about 90 minutes.
All along the walk we were entertained by the variety of bird calls. Thanks Sirius Tas for locating the trig point and for marking the way with pink tape. That made it much easier to get to GZ for us than it would have been for you. Sirius Tas certainly earned his FTF on this one.
Visiting this Trig was like visiting and old friend as last here some 30 yrs ago. Placed a sighting vane over the mark as per photo.
Great spot to revisit and Murders(4paws) 2nd Trig....though quite a bit harder than his 1st.
After all the work involved...a FTF is claimed.
