Description

A Trig Point is a virtual cache which requires a cacher to locate the Trigonometric Station at GZ.

A trig point (also known as a Trigonometric Station) typically consists of a black disc on top of four metal legs or concrete pillar, resembling a navigation beacon. It is also accompanied by a metal disc, which is located directly below the center point of the tripod or on top of the pillar itself.

Trig points are generally located at the top of hills or points of prominence in the landscape. Many provide unique views and challenges, with some being difficult to get to.

These points were regarded as valuable to surveyors, providing reference points for measuring distance and direction, and assisting in the creation of maps.

To log a find on the Geocaching Australia website, you will need to include a picture of the trig point, along with your GPS receiver and (preferably) yourself. Long distance / telephoto type pictures are against the spirit of this cache. You are encouraged to leave a description of your journey in your log to help others in finding the trig point.

The original collection of trig points has been sourced from Geoscience Australia and may contain inaccuracies.

Please respect local laws and regulations when searching for trig points. If you believe that a trig point is located on private property or in a dangerous location, you may archive the cache, by clicking on Log this Cache and place an "Archived" log on the Geocaching Australia website.

If you feel that you can add to the description of this trig point or adjust the difficulty / terrain ratings, please feel free to edit this cache and amend the information suitably. Vandalism of the cache description or other information will result in your account being terminated.

Parking and access through the fence along the edge of the National Park is at S31 51.515 E116 03.889

On the way back down the hill from the previous cache we could see that the shower was still some distance away so diverted over to find this trig point.

Photo taken and will be posted when I get it off the GPS which is playing up at the moment. (Probably for lack of use.)

Technically 99.9% of trig points in WA are marked by SSM plates and except for a few with concrete pillers (different type of plate) and a few more with actual structures the only way to tell whether they are or were trig points is that they are marked on the old topographical maps as trig points or pay Landgate to do a manual search at a substantial $ cost for each one that needs to be identified. (The electronic version of the SSM data does not have enough information to identify any SSM points that are also trig points.)

This particular one and the others identified with this one are marked on a topographical map as a trig point so are classed as one without knowing if there was ever an actual structure.

This view on what is or what is not a trig point was formed and accepted a number of years ago for WA trigs when the information above was first ascertained.

If this view is not now to be accepted and SSM plates can never be trig points without any structure on or around them then technically all the others that exist without structures will have to be archived as well as they are basically only ever identified by SSM plates. (ie >98% of the existing WA trig points will go.)

Me thinks this is SSM not Trig???

Found while out caching with dezzabills and Lazarus_68. Was a little confusion as to the status with this one hence the late log (posted o the 2nd Aug). We drove up past the new estate going in and walked up the hill, then we set off for the lookout on Toodyay Rd to continue our caching on the TBROG series.

found this State Survey Marker (not actually a trig) confirmed by a friend who works for a mapping organisation.

My grandparents carried me up to this cache and I played with the lid whilst they took pictures.

Thank you for the cache.

Thanks for the cache.

Another trig found on the 25K topographical map for the area. Went with the family today to find it and enjoyed the view from GZ.

(The blocks on the hill below near the parking area are going for 500k to 600k if anybody is interested and the views are similar to what can be seen at the trig.)
