Description

CORS (Continually Operating Reference Stations) collecting geodetic data from GNSS.

A CORS is a Continuously Operating Reference Station. CORS can take the place of a traditional base station used in differential GNSS positing. They can give an instant position to an accuracy of ±20 mm and are used in many industries including Precision Agriculture, Construction, Mining, Surveying and in Scientific Research.

Typically, the maximum distance between a base station and rover GNSS set up is around 10 - 15 km. This is due to the effect of the atmosphere on the GNSS signals as they travel from the satellite to a GNSS receiver.

With the establishment of a network of CORS, the distance between the base and the rover can be extended. The CORS can be spaced around 70 km apart and using at least 3 of these CORS, the atmospheric effects can be modelled and corrected for, yielding the ±20 mm position solution required by so many industries.

More info on CORS can be found here: CORS

GCA 1754. Found (phew) this afternoon after taking the kids home.

I found my daily GCA cache today with minniek at the Dickson CORS as we were nearby doing some Earthcaches. Unfortunately when I went to log it on line - oops - already found it way back in Dec 2012, only the 2nd CORS I ever found. So back out I went this afternoon and grabbed the Charnwood CORS -a nice and easy one close by.

TFTC !!

#GA1992 - 15:45; I was collecting a newish GC cache in Evatt and noticed that this CORS was the closest GCA cache from the GC find. Made my way over and circled the block before finding a good parking spot, wandering over and grabbing the required snap. Another day in the dZ calendar filled Dancing One of the easier CORS to spot in Canberra I reckon. TFTC Geocaching Australia Very HappyClan Cerberus

Popped over to Charnwood, parking at the shops and walking around to the front of the building. Not too hard to find if you've done CORS before.

02-Jun-17
Well, how embarrassing. A CORs in our own backyard but discovered by the roaming team of 2y'stassies from Tasmania. But I guess that's just the caring sharing type of folk we are here in Canberra. Well, the Cerberus ones anyway... WhistleWhistle

Had to go out and about today so took the longer way home and headed out for this one. Didn't take too long to spot the COR's, but with the traffic I decided to take my photo from just across the road. The CORS can still be seen ok, so all is good.

We locals should now look at what others COR's may be lurking around the area that we haven't seen.

Thanks for another one......

Whilst driving around some suburbs in Canberra we came across the Charnwood CORS. This is not currently listed in the GCA Database (the nearest listed trig in GCA is 1.14km from the coordinates provided by SmartNet Aus). Two photos have been added to the Gallery showing the CORS antenna on the roof of an unidentified building fronting onto both Lhotsky Street and Ginninderra Drive in Charnwood. Thanks for the cache.
