Description

CORS (Continually Operating Reference Stations) collecting geodetic data from GNSS.

A CORS is a Continuously Operating Reference Station. CORS can take the place of a traditional base station used in differential GNSS positing. They can give an instant position to an accuracy of ±20 mm and are used in many industries including Precision Agriculture, Construction, Mining, Surveying and in Scientific Research.

Typically, the maximum distance between a base station and rover GNSS set up is around 10 - 15 km. This is due to the effect of the atmosphere on the GNSS signals as they travel from the satellite to a GNSS receiver.

With the establishment of a network of CORS, the distance between the base and the rover can be extended. The CORS can be spaced around 70 km apart and using at least 3 of these CORS, the atmospheric effects can be modelled and corrected for, yielding the ±20 mm position solution required by so many industries.

More info on CORS can be found here: CORS

To log a find on the Geocaching Australia website, you will need to include a picture of the CORS, along with your GPS receiver and (preferably) yourself.  You are encouraged to leave a description of your journey in your log to help others in finding the CORS.

Staying in Ararat for a few days. Out and about caching for the day. Lovin' life, coffees and caches, waymarks and photos, taking the roads less travelled. Dancing
Does it get any better than travelling this great land of ours? Very Happy

Stopped by to take the obligatory photo after the prerequisite coffee. Smile

Thanks for a chance to stop and stretch the ol' legs. Clapping

Found on our way from Melbourne to Horsham, caching as we go. Walked down a laneway behind the building to get this photo

Had to go around the block a few times to get the required photo. On our way to Adelaide.

Easily found once we did a drive around the building. I know we were a bit disorientated but we wouldn't have thought this one was on the eastern side of the building at all. Perhaps we should have got out our compass.
Thanks.

We had to come up to Ararat today for several reasons - shopping, lunch with friends, and cache maintenance. We walked around to this CORS while in the area. Thought we had taken the photo really well, but on viewing it at home, the pole got in the way, although if you look closely enough just to the right of it, there it is!!

After finding the cache at Dadswells Bridge we continued on to Ararat where we had hoped to find two GCA caches and five GC caches. As the majority of these caches were located along unsealed roads and given the recent wet weather we felt hesitant at tackling these tracks in our two wheel drive street car. We decided to make an inspection of the access which proved to be the worst part of the road.

Once over the entrĂ nce of this track we decided to proceed carefully to GZ for this cache. Although the road surface was quite wet and the gutters at the road edges were full of water and quite soft the road base was firm and well formed without ruts. We took things slowly and to our surprise and delight we were able to find the GCA cache and the five GC caches on the unsealed tracks. It was now time to head into Ararat and take the required photo of the CORS. We had located the CORS mast information on the website some time ago so were confident we could locate it.

Found with no trouble. The required photo is attached.

Found this CORs while in the area for a few days with LuckyL10n. Missed it on our first attempt as the co-ords didn't seem right, but on the way through later in the day, there it was.

Photo grabbed, CORs published and all is good.

#GA1961 - 15:30; After missing this CORS yesterday when we passed through Ararat just before day break, we spotted the CORS sitting atop the Ararat Rural City Council building as we headed back towards Creswick after a leisurely drive to Learmonth, St Arnaud, Wycheproof then through Beulah to Brim for some silo art and on to Warracknabeal and home again via Ararat. The coords are a little different to those I had from a different website, but the Vicmap wesite had the correct coordinates. Grabbed some snaps for a joint *FTF* with Sdl on our way past.
