Description

CORS (Continually Operating Reference Stations) collecting geodetic data from GNSS.

A CORS is a Continuously Operating Reference Station. CORS can take the place of a traditional base station used in differential GNSS positing. They can give an instant position to an accuracy of ±20 mm and are used in many industries including Precision Agriculture, Construction, Mining, Surveying and in Scientific Research.

Typically, the maximum distance between a base station and rover GNSS set up is around 10 - 15 km. This is due to the effect of the atmosphere on the GNSS signals as they travel from the satellite to a GNSS receiver.

With the establishment of a network of CORS, the distance between the base and the rover can be extended. The CORS can be spaced around 70 km apart and using at least 3 of these CORS, the atmospheric effects can be modelled and corrected for, yielding the ±20 mm position solution required by so many industries.

More info on CORS can be found here: CORS

Official name of this Trig Station as per SmartNet Australia is ORBO.  It is located on the roof of the DSE Orbost Depot, Cnr Salisbury & Nicholson Street, Orbost, Victoria.

We arrived in Orbost late in the afternoon and had sufficient light to locate the Orbost CORS. Two photos have been added to the Gallery: Mrs y'stassie in the foreground with the CORS antenna on the roof behind; and a closer view of the CORS antenna. Thanks Geocaching Australia for the cache.

A perfect stop for a snap, and a snack... dinner wouldn't be until we reached our accommodation.

Road trip!

leafotwind and I had meticulously planned a trip in the opposite direction to fill a few gaps on a variety of challenges, but with the weather forecast to be reminiscent of an Activities Week tour of all the wet holes in the southwest of the state when I was in high school, a mad scramble ensued to come up with a scheme to complement those goals towards the eastern border instead.

Crossing off a few of the Country Road Atlas maps, finding a March, 2001 placement and a whole lot of Earthcaches meant we got in to Mallacoota just before midnight.

Grabbed with LuckyL10n on day one of our eastern Victoria road trip. Checked out any possible new CORs before leaving home and this was the second one we discovered that wasn't published. Once we found it was in location, it was published and then claimed.

Lots of new CORs coming online...great to see.

#GA2119 - 14:40; Day one of a caching run through eastern Victoria with Sol de lune to build on our July trip further to the west. A bit of research before heading off revealed the existence of some hitherto unpublished CORS along our route, so we decided that we should seek to establish their existence since we were passing anyway. Second one on the list and again, it is right where it was supposed to be. Happy to grab another *FTF* for the effort. TFTC Geocaching Australia Very HappyClan Cerberus
