Description

CORS (Continually Operating Reference Stations) collecting geodetic data from GNSS.

A CORS is a Continuously Operating Reference Station. CORS can take the place of a traditional base station used in differential GNSS positing. They can give an instant position to an accuracy of ±20 mm and are used in many industries including Precision Agriculture, Construction, Mining, Surveying and in Scientific Research.

Typically, the maximum distance between a base station and rover GNSS set up is around 10 - 15 km. This is due to the effect of the atmosphere on the GNSS signals as they travel from the satellite to a GNSS receiver.

With the establishment of a network of CORS, the distance between the base and the rover can be extended. The CORS can be spaced around 70 km apart and using at least 3 of these CORS, the atmospheric effects can be modelled and corrected for, yielding the ±20 mm position solution required by so many industries.

More info on CORS can be found here: CORS

Official name of this Trig Station as per SmartNet Australia is BEEC.  It is located on farmland along Flat Rock Road, Beechworth, Victoria, opposite the Beechworth Correctional Centre.

Our last day caching in the region, heading to Mansfield - we spent the morning caching around Beechworth.... This is an unusual CORS....

Coordinate errors (on my part) had me all over the place...but I eventually settled down and found the right road.

My trip today was from Guildford to Wodonga with a few side trips to pick up a cache or two. Some were GC caches but then there were ones like this. I found it rather interesting that it is a CORS rather than a trig. Out in the middle of the paddock? Somehow I managed quite a remarkable route to drive to the location and quite a different one out.

As you can probably tell from the photo, it was a grey miserable Spring day and I even wondered as I drove in if I would be able to see through the low cloud. Because of the weather I opted out of the walk and photographed the CORS from my car.

TFTT Geocaching Australia A different but fun one to do.

Now that we are back home from our latest trip to the northern island, we are going through our photos and found one of the Beechworth CORS. When we pulled up we were aware of the correctional centre across the road and thought that security may be tight but we didn't have any problems. With the permission of a farm hand working on the property, we entered the area and took the short walk to GX where we located the CORS mounted prominently on a rock outcrop. The photo added to the Gallery shows Mrs y'stassie standing next to the Beechworth CORS antenna. We wondered why this CORS was located out in the middle of a paddock rather than closer to a building for the provision of power and communications - guess these have been provided underground to the site. There are certainly very pleasant views to the north from this location.

Last day of a 3 day road trip with LuckyL10n around the eastern and central parts of Victoria and part of the trip plan was to visit, photograph and publish a few CORs that aren't on GCA yet. This one is out in the paddock, but easily spotted from the road side. Photo's were duly snapped and we off towards home.

A great few days on the road.....road works not counted. Rolling EyesRolling Eyes

#GA2168 - 09:30; Day three of a caching run through eastern Victoria with Sol de lune to build on our July trip further to the west. After a night in Alexandra, today we are headed for home via Mansfield, Mt Buller, Euroa, Benalla, Myrtleford and Beechworth. A bit of research before heading off from home revealed the existence of some hitherto unpublished CORS along our route, so we decided that we should seek to establish their existence since we were passing anyway. This was our last stop as we headed north for Wodonga and the Hume Highway. The GPSr wanted to take us the long way around, but we managed to find a quicker way. The CORS is located on farmland opposite the Beechworth Correctional Centre, so we grabbed our shots from a little further along the road looking up the hill at the facility. Another *FTF* on another new CORS to wrap up the trip. TFTT Geocaching Australia Very HappyClan Cerberus
