Description

CORS (Continually Operating Reference Stations) collecting geodetic data from GNSS.

A CORS is a Continuously Operating Reference Station. CORS can take the place of a traditional base station used in differential GNSS positing. They can give an instant position to an accuracy of ±20 mm and are used in many industries including Precision Agriculture, Construction, Mining, Surveying and in Scientific Research.

Typically, the maximum distance between a base station and rover GNSS set up is around 10 - 15 km. This is due to the effect of the atmosphere on the GNSS signals as they travel from the satellite to a GNSS receiver.

With the establishment of a network of CORS, the distance between the base and the rover can be extended. The CORS can be spaced around 70 km apart and using at least 3 of these CORS, the atmospheric effects can be modelled and corrected for, yielding the ±20 mm position solution required by so many industries.

More info on CORS can be found here: CORS

I didn’t have any luck with the nearby cache...so I moved on to more successful areas.

23-Feb-20
A tree climbing expedition to Walla Walla, with dalerious and ILookedThere, gave me the opportunity to take a photo of this CORS late in the day.
It was a fun and most productive day but I was too knackered by then to get out of the car to have my photo taken. You’d better believe I was sitting in my car reflected in the photo!
Thanks for the cache and my opportunity to make another green spot on my NSW map.

Making our way from Wagga to Albury to day caching as we go. Travelled some back roads but you get to see more of the countryside that way. Walla Walla was a very quiet place today, nothing moving in the main street at all. TFTC

On a weekend trip to the Murray River near Corowa with Fitzy. After a relaxing lunch in the shade of a great apex table, we snapped the required image and moved on to look for an elisive canon cache.

Thanks

With no GCA caches on the GPS due to a break in downloads, we resorted to using the phone. In a small town on a distinctive building it wasn't hard to find the CORS.

After a failed mission to come to Walla Walla last week, I found myself with a full day off today to come today. I have been planning to do the ‘4.5 Tree Climb Trail’ for quite some time and collect the pre-solved puzzles located within the town limits. It was full of finds, DNF’s, lunch and conversations with the people I met along the way. I also loved the great locations I visited today. After finishing caching in Walla, I headed north to collect the lone caches around the back roads which lead to lots of backtrack driving. With all this driving I found myself with almost 600kms making it my biggest distant caching day I have ever yet. TB visit on all found caches. On some of the smaller log sheets/books I signed as 5/9 JM. I would like to thank all CO’s for the caches I found, the locations I visited and for the fun I had today. Big Grin
Today’s totals:
24 Finds (20 Groundspeak and 3 GCA)
3 DNF’s

My first GCA find of the day and a quick one. TFTTP

For those that like to know about some of the history of the area, next year will mark the 150th year of settlement in Walla Walla and the upcoming celebrations will be held on the 25-28 January 2019. On our way back from the ACT, we went west of the Hume freeway to look for some specific caches. On the way we passed through Walla Walla and located this CORS on top of the farm supplies building. Two photos have been added to the Galley: Mrs y'stassie standing in front of the premises with the CORS antenna on the peak of the gable behind; and a closer view of the CORS antenna on the gable. thanks geocaching Australia for the cache.
