Description

CORS (Continually Operating Reference Stations) collecting geodetic data from GNSS.

A CORS is a Continuously Operating Reference Station. CORS can take the place of a traditional base station used in differential GNSS positing. They can give an instant position to an accuracy of ±20 mm and are used in many industries including Precision Agriculture, Construction, Mining, Surveying and in Scientific Research.

Typically, the maximum distance between a base station and rover GNSS set up is around 10 - 15 km. This is due to the effect of the atmosphere on the GNSS signals as they travel from the satellite to a GNSS receiver.

With the establishment of a network of CORS, the distance between the base and the rover can be extended. The CORS can be spaced around 70 km apart and using at least 3 of these CORS, the atmospheric effects can be modelled and corrected for, yielding the ±20 mm position solution required by so many industries.

More info on CORS can be found here: CORS

While waiting to check in to my accommodation, and the predicted rain hadn't yet arrived, I decided to do a few GA caches. I drove around the block twice before I spotted this. TFTT

#GA5560 - 13:05; Day 3 of the Wang Mega tour with Sol de lune. Today we are headed west from our overnighter at the Falcon Hotel (great meals and hospitality) caching our way to Mildura, the next stop on our itinerary. After claiming the "Downunder Dunny" we were on the road again. A few stops in Echuca and then along the highway, we had reached Swan Hill. A quick snap before grabbing a bit to eat and hitting the road again. TFTT Geocaching Australia Very HappyClan Cerberus

At my destination for the next two nights...

LuckyL10n and I attended the Mega at Wangaratta and then headed to Mildura as LL had some non caching business to sort, and Echuca was our first overnight stop. A few new trigs have been published since our visit to the area and the plan was to grab these as well. No issue with this CORs and the required photo was soon snapped.

Thanks for another trig.....

After spending some time wandering around the Swan Hill Pioneer Museum Pa drove me round town picking up GCA caches. This was one of them. Today was designated a GCA day.

Whilst others found easy access via KFC I was very hamstrung by the fact I was driving a 58 seat bus and there's just not too many places to park one of those Brick Wall
I found a roadside gap around the corner and could see the CORS across the rooftop so it turned into a quick "park and grab".

A quick find of a very noticeable trig.
Found the best way to access this one was through the KFC carpark. Our timing was pretty good as the lunch time crowd were well and truly gone but it was a bit too early for the tea time rush.
Thanks.

As part of our preparation for this trip, we checked the SmartNet Aus site to see if there were any new CORS along the route we would be taking. We noticed that there was a CORS at Boort.

After staying overnight in Swan Hill, we headed towards the south east to look for caches around Quambatook, Boort, Mount Terrick Terrick, Pyramid Hill and Kerang before returning back to Swan Hill. We had a very enjoyable day visiting places we had not seen before. As we made our way back into Swan Hill we went to look for this CORS antenna. We located it on the roof at the back of the DEPI Office with the best view obtained from the KFC carpark. The required photo has been added to the Gallery. Thanks Geocaching Australia for the cache.
