Description

CORS (Continually Operating Reference Stations) collecting geodetic data from GNSS

A CORS is a Continuously Operating Reference Station. CORS can take the place of a traditional base station used in differential GNSS positing. They can give an instant position to an accuracy of ±20 mm and are used in many industries including Precision Agriculture, Construction, Mining, Surveying and in Scientific Research.

Typically, the maximum distance between a base station and rover GNSS set up is around 10 - 15 km. This is due to the effect of the atmosphere on the GNSS signals as they travel from the satellite to a GNSS receiver.

With the establishment of a network of CORS, the distance between the base and the rover can be extended. The CORS can be spaced around 70 km apart and using at least 3 of these CORS, the atmospheric effects can be modelled and corrected for, yielding the ±20 mm position solution required by so many industries.

More info on CORS can be found here: CORS

Trig Point hunting in Coburg after my 100th CITO.

We're headed home from Victoria this morning, after a massive week caching from Rutherglen to Melbourne via Ballarat. There were a rather disappointing lack of trigs around Melbourne, but we managed to divert this way on the way to the airport for one more.... Shot from across outside the school grounds.

12-Apr-23
Came over for an event and an alphabet letter. Added two extra trigs and hopefully an LGA. Busy day.

#GA4028 - 14:15; In Melbourne for a couple of days before jumping the boat and heading for Tassie. Dropped the geohoney off for some retail therapy and headed off for a couple of caches including this elusive CORS. School was out, but the gates were open, with workment on site. Parked the geomobile and headed close for a nice snap of the CORS. TFTT Geocaching Australia Very HappyClan Cerberus

A trip to Melbourne, a couple of GC caches and a few GCA caches today.

Coburg CORS station...

I well remember the old "Bluestone College" (though not as an inmate Whistle ) and have often thought of driving through the former Pentridge Prison site just to see how it looks now. I thinks it's fantastic that some of the former watchtowers remain along with quite a lot of the original bluestone walls.

Anyway, I approached GZ from the north side just so I could drive through the area, then entered the school carpark for a quick photo. I did notice a padlock on the gate at the entrance to the school drive so I doubt this would be a drive-by outside school hours.

In the area for another cache so came down to check this one out. Headed around the back into Lynn street where the CORS could be seen close up. Photos was snapped and all was good.

We had a few hours between arriving in Melbourne and boarding the Spirit of Tasmania for home. This gave us the opportunity to see if this existed and to take the required photos if visible. Being Easter the school was closed and photos had to be taken from outside the boundary fence. Two photos have been added to the Gallery: Mrs y'stassie standing in front of the school gates with the CORS antenna visible on the roof of the gymnasium (circled to highlight the antenna); and a closer view of the CORS antenna with the antenna circled. Thanks Geocaching Australia for the cache.
