Description

A Trig Point is a virtual cache which requires a cacher to locate the Trigonometric Station and photograph the GZ.

Official Code: TS7393
Official Name: Dunoon

A trig point (also known as a Trigonometric Station) typically consists of a black disc on top of four metal legs or concrete pillar, resembling a navigation beacon. It is also accompanied by a metal disc, which is located directly below the center point of the tripod or on top of the pillar itself.

Trig points are generally located at the top of hills or points of prominence in the landscape. Many provide unique views and challenges, with some being difficult to get to.

These points were regarded as valuable to surveyors, providing reference points for measuring distance and direction, and assisting in the creation of maps.

To log a find on the Geocaching Australia website, you will need to include a picture of the trig point, along with your GPS receiver and (preferably) yourself. Long distance / telephoto type pictures are against the spirit of this cache. You are encouraged to leave a description of your journey in your log to help others in finding the trig point.

Please respect local laws and regulations when searching for trig points. If you believe that a trig point is located on private property, and permission to access the trig is not forthcoming, or in a dangerous location, you may archive the cache, by clicking on Log this Cache and place an "Archived" log on the Geocaching Australia website.

If you feel that you can add to the description of this trig point or adjust the difficulty / terrain ratings, please feel free to edit this cache and amend the information suitably.

Access for Dunoon TS: Park near a gate @ S 28° 40.528' E 153° 19.361' . An easy walk up the hill in a nicely kept area.

Today’s plan changed on me but it ended up being an awesome Plan B adventure! I just made it in time for the last light of the day. I checked out the Trig and some art on the tanks then stood and admired the final daylight colours of this glorious moment. By the time I got back to the van it was dark and the sunset colours were gone. At this stage I would normally find myself one more geocache to find for the night time. I’ve been to this location before (before I figured out how to use GCA on my iPhone). MattyRx had a Wherigo Cache here. Unfortunately at the time I tried it there was an API issue for iOS users. That has since been fixed but the Wherigo has since been archived. I would have tackled this one as a nighttime adventure if it was still active. I enjoy Wherigo Caches, I think they are an underrated cache type, particularly if utilised to their full potential. With no Wherigo Cache here I decided I had a solid day of adventuring and it was now time for dinner and a beer then to hit the road. Thanks for the cache Very Happy

Happy birthday to me Very Happy I visited the Dunoon TS this afternoon to celebrate my Happy Geocaching Australia Birthday. This is my first anniversary of joining Geocaching Australia. There was a heavy shower of rain earlier in the afternoon and now the wind is icy. The hills and the skies are blue. The sunset is spectacular with beams breaking through the water colour skies. The graffiti on the water tower changes over time. Even the pandemic is immortalised in paint. Thanks for the cache.

The Dunoon trig point is located in the Dorrobbee Grass Reserve atop a graffitied (or decorated) water tower. In the village, an information sign details that the reserve was established in 1878 to provide a camping ground for bullock teams working in the 'Big Scrub'. The reserve is now much smaller and is maintained by a Trust of local volunteers. A circular path at the top of the hill provides 360 degree views of the area with interpretative signs about the significance of different landforms. A nice spot to take in the scenery.

I went up and walked all the way around it and some without even thinking about the trig till I was reminded back at the car.

Note: Photo didn't load with log through app. Photo lost.

Found while staying in the area for a few days

I've been looking at some maps of the area, and discovered that there should be a trig here somewhere. I drove up to the gate, and wandered in - and sure enough - there it is in all it's glory. On top of the water tank. Took the required photo.
